Cook II - Nutrition & Food Services (Full-time, Various Start Times)

Join Northwestern Medicine as a Cook II - Nutrition & Food Services. This full-time role involves preparing hot food and meal items in a safe and sanitary manner, supporting the Food and Nutrition Team.

Responsibilities
  1. Measure, mix, and prepare ingredients according to recipes.
  2. Use kitchen equipment such as blenders, mixers, grinders, slicers, ovens, and steamers properly.
  3. Apply knife skills (chopping, slicing, dicing, paring) consistently.
  4. Prepare and present menu items for café, patients, and catering following recipes and standards.
  5. Prepare sauces, soups, stews, casseroles, and desserts adhering to dietary guidelines.
  6. Cook meats, fish, and poultry safely using baking, roasting, broiling, and steaming; carve into servings per recipe/diet order.
  7. Monitor and record temperatures of hot-held items during service.
  8. Test foods for doneness, adjust heat controls, and ensure proper temperatures for serving or holding.
  9. Produce flavorful, attractively presented food.
  10. Modify ingredients or seasonings only when directed by culinary leadership.
  11. Maintain product levels and appearance of service stations.
  12. Consult with managers regarding leftovers handling.
  13. Follow infection control and HACCP practices at all times.
  14. Complete daily temperature logs and production sheets accurately.
  15. Keep kitchen/station safe and organized.
  16. Manage work schedule efficiently, completing tasks on time.
  17. Monitor cooking equipment and communicate repair needs to management.
  18. Perform other duties as assigned by supervisors.
Qualifications

Required:

  • High School diploma or equivalent, or at least 1 year relevant experience in cooking, production, or food service.
  • Successful completion of Safe Food Handler certification within 1 year of hire.

Preferred:

  • Previous healthcare cooking experience.
  • Culinary schooling completion.
  • Basic knowledge of special diets.
