Shift: Varies, 6a to 2p, 10:30a to 6:30p (weekdays), 9:30a - 5:30p (weekends)
Status: Full Time - Non Exempt
Reports To: Food Services Director & Kitchen Supervisor
Position Summary
The Cook will prepare meals, follow established recipes, prepare ingredients, and adhere to the daily menu and food safety procedures. Work may include operating a grill, oven, or fryer.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Prepare meals and supervise resident work crew assisting in meal preparation, ensuring meals are ready on time, served attractively, and in proper portions to meet contract obligations, comply with government standards, and enhance residents’ enjoyment.
- Assist with providing leadership to peers and resident kitchen staff through work assignments, monitoring, reviewing results, and providing technical instruction or training in the absence of senior staff to ensure smooth food service operations.
- Assist with cleaning the kitchen and equipment according to safety and sanitation requirements (e.g., gloves, sinks, refrigerators), ensuring safety guards are in place on equipment, sharp objects are stored properly, spills are cleaned immediately, and the workspace is kept clean per contractual requirements.
- Train and supervise resident crew in food presentation to ensure meals are tasty and appealing, enhancing resident satisfaction.
- Handle trash removal from the service area.
- Supervise the receiving and verification of food supplies, unloading trucks, and securing the area to ensure only received merchandise is charged and the food service area is secure. Forward all invoices to the Kitchen Supervisor.
- Maintain sufficient stock for meals, ensure proper rotation of stock items to keep food fresh, and minimize spoilage costs.
- Report maintenance issues, equipment failures, inventory shortages, and resident or staff concerns to senior staff promptly.
- Monitor resident activity in the kitchen and dining room, taking appropriate actions to resolve issues before they escalate.
- Package food for delivery to other facilities based on their needs; deliver food safely and timely.
- Follow safety rules; take corrective actions to perform work safely and prevent injuries.
- Communicate effectively with all staff levels.
Qualifications
Education and Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or GED (Required)
- At least six months of cooking experience, preferably in an institutional setting.
- Serve Safe Certification required after hire.
- Experience in team environments and various cooking methods preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Well-organized, detail-oriented, task-driven.
- Ability to work independently and prioritize tasks daily using a weekly and monthly schedule.
- Effective communication skills with staff at all levels.
