Cook Helper (10:00am-12:45pm) - Timberline High School

North Thurston Public Schools | Lacey, WA 98503

Employment Begins: 2024-2025 School Year

2.75 hours/day; 5 days/week; 195 days/year

Classification: Cook Helper

Location: Assigned Building

Reports to: Cook or Kitchen Manager

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Bargaining Unit: PSE

Part I: Position Summary

Performs routine work in preparing, setting up, serving, and clean-up activities for meal programs. Assists cook(s) with work involving food storage and kitchen/cafeteria maintenance and operation. Knowledge of current methods of food preparation, health codes, and sanitation is required.

Part II: Supervision and Controls over the Work

Works under the specific supervision of a cook or Kitchen Manager who provides direction in the preparation of food products and assigns support tasks. The employee is expected to follow directions and make simple adjustments as necessary to resolve problems.

Part III: Major Duties and Responsibilities
  • Serve meal components to customers on service line.
  • Prepare meals by following recipes, gathering ingredients, and cooking materials.
  • Monitor food cooking and follow Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) procedures.
  • Assist in securing equipment and supplies.
  • Assist with production records, HACCP documentation, and ordering supplies.
  • Wash dishes, utensils, and maintain a sanitary work environment.
  • Required to follow Board policies and stay updated on changes.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by administrator and/or designee.
Part IV: Minimum Qualifications
  • Successful experience in working with culturally diverse families and communities.
  • Knowledge of current methods of food preparation, health codes, and sanitation.
  • Ability to serve appropriate portion sizes rapidly and neatly.
  • Ability to operate point of service system.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Initiative and ability to work under direction and make sound decisions.
  • Ability to cooperate with others in fast-paced conditions.
  • Ability to be flexible to changing work environments.
  • Basic math computation skills.
  • Washington State Food Handler's Permit required.
Part V: Desired Qualifications
  • Graduation from high school or equivalent.
  • Job-related experience in food preparation and serving.
  • Previous experience in a routine cafeteria setting.
  • Certification with School Nutrition Association.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to bend, lift, sit, move about, hear, and speak. Noise level may be high from kitchen equipment and students at meals. Required to stand for prolonged periods and perform repetitive movements. Other physical abilities include carrying, pushing, pulling, balancing, stooping, and reaching. Employee will be exposed to heat from ovens and cutting equipment.

Employees who are anticipated to work 630 hours during the school year are eligible for medical, dental, vision, long-term disability, and basic life insurance benefits.

Eligible employees must be members of the Washington State Department of Retirement Systems Plan. Employees can participate in tax-deferred 403(b) and 457 Deferred Compensation Plans.
