For over 125 years, Catholic Charities Brooklyn and Queens has been providing quality social services to the neighborhoods of Brooklyn and Queens, offering over 160 programs for children, youth, adults, seniors, and those with mental illness.
Our Early Childhood Development Centers provide free Head Start services to low-income families. Head Start serves children aged 3 to 5 years old. Using a Montessori approach, the center prepares children for school through developmentally appropriate activities promoting cognitive, social, emotional, language-literacy, and physical development.
Statement of the Job
Under the supervision of the Program Manager and Assistant Program Manager, the Cook is responsible for working with the Cook Helper to serve all food in the center and maintain a sanitary, efficient kitchen. The Cook must adhere to standards of attendance, punctuality, and confidentiality of HIPAA. The work schedule is provided by the Program Manager, outlining specific responsibilities and timing. The Cook collaborates with staff to improve the Center's services.
Responsibilities include participating in staff meetings and conferences, adjusting to program changes affecting employees, and suggesting improvements. The Cook is responsible for the safe preparation and storage of all food items, cooking and serving food according to best practices, washing dishes, and assuming housekeeping duties as needed. The role also includes overseeing food and supply storage and performing other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
High School Diploma or equivalent required. Food Handlers Certificate preferred. Two years of experience in food preparation, preferably in an early childhood setting, is preferred. Must be able to lift and carry supplies/equipment of at least 40 pounds and move up and down stairs. Ability to travel across the five boroughs as needed.
