Position Details

Title: Cook

Location: Olmsted Elementary

Purpose: To assist in administering an effective and efficient nutrition services program for Urbandale Schools. Review the UCSD Actions of Excellence to understand employee expectations.

Qualifications
Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HAACP) preferred.
  • Experience in quantity food preparation and preserving nutritional value.
  • Understanding of food service regulations and sanitary codes.
  • Knowledge of work safety, security, and emergency procedures.
  • Manual dexterity and ability to operate kitchen equipment.
  • Flexibility to adapt to environmental changes and handle peak periods.
  • Ability to interpret various forms of communication and work in English.
  • Proficiency with computers and record keeping.
  • Strong customer service skills and ability to work well with others.
Education
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
Certification/Licensure
  • Completion of 4-6 hours of training in nutrition, food safety, and school nutrition orientation within the first year.
  • ServSafe Certification required within one year of hire, maintained throughout employment.
Experience
  • Quantity cooking experience preferred.
Equipment
  • Use of office equipment and kitchen appliances.
Essential Duties
  • Ensure compliance with USDA Meal Pattern Requirements and Nutrition Standards.
  • Prepare food and manage kitchen operations efficiently.
  • Maintain health and safety regulations.
  • Interact professionally with staff, students, vendors, and inspectors.
  • Lead food preparation, quality control, and presentation.
  • Assist with serving and cleanup duties.
  • Organize and rotate stock properly.
  • Follow safety guidelines including HACCP.
  • Attend meetings and maintain reliable attendance.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
Reporting and Physical Requirements
  • Reports to Production Kitchen Manager and Director of Nutrition Services.
  • Ability to stand/walk most of the day, lift 50 lbs, and work in a kitchen environment.
  • Maintain health certification and a drug-free work environment.
Work Conditions and Terms
  • Primarily in a kitchen or school setting with occasional outside meetings.
  • At-will employment, subject to policies and annual performance reviews.
