Job Purpose

The Dietary Aide assists with food preparation in accordance with established procedural guidelines, under the direction of the Food Service/Dietary Manager or Supervisor. The Cook prepares nutritious, palatable meals that comply with departmental policies, state, and federal regulations, catering to the daily nutritional and special diet needs of residents. Ensures food is prepared and served at proper temperatures and times. Collaborates with the Director of Food Service to allocate resources efficiently, ensuring residents receive appropriate food portions and quality of life.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Assist in meal preparation, including salads, desserts, snacks, and between-meal nourishments.
  2. Follow diet and NPO orders accurately.
  3. Serve nourishments according to guidelines.
  4. Properly store leftovers and opened food items.
  5. Follow procedures for serving partner meals and record menu substitutions.
  6. Adhere to infection control policies.
  7. Deliver trays to residents and serve beverages as requested.
  8. Clean dining and work areas thoroughly after meals.
  9. Maintain kitchen equipment and supplies, ensuring cleanliness and proper storage.
  10. Record temperatures of refrigerators and freezers, and maintain dishwashing equipment.
  11. Operate food service equipment safely and efficiently.
  12. Follow recipes and prepare meals according to menu cycles.
  13. Supervise kitchen staff assisting with food prep and cleaning.
  14. Prepare food substitutes to accommodate resident preferences and monitor tray acceptance.
  15. Handle food supplies properly, following safety and sanitation standards.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  1. Participate in surveys and report as required.
  2. Attend ongoing education and maintain certifications.
  3. Respect residents’ rights and comply with compliance programs.
  4. Report hazards and follow safety procedures.
  5. Demonstrate honesty, integrity, and respect for residents.
  6. Follow recipes and safety protocols for food handling.
  7. Respond effectively to emergency procedures.
  8. Maintain a sanitary environment and report issues promptly.

Minimum Education & Experience

  • Basic literacy skills.
  • At least one year of institutional food service experience as a cook.

Additional Qualifications

  • Experience in long-term care food production is preferred.
