Job description

Jefferson Franklin Community Action Corporation (JFCAC) was established in 1965 under the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964. We are a not-for-profit agency working to improve our communities by creating strong partnerships with those willing to help us address the causes and conditions of poverty in both Jefferson and Franklin Counties.

This position is responsible for buying, storing, preparing, cooking and serving meals to the Head Start children. The cook coordinates with center staff on activities and supervises kitchen volunteers. Is also responsible for general cleaning of the classrooms, bathrooms and kitchen used by JFCAC children, staff and families.

MAJOR TASKS:

Cook duties:

Prepares and serves nutritious and economical meals according to the planned menu. Serves meals in an attractive environment using "family style" meal service.

  1. The Cook/Custodian conforms to printed Head Start menus posted in the kitchen except when an emergency arises. In an emergency the substitute menu is used.
  2. The Cook/Custodian ensures changes made in an approved menu, due to availability of food item must be approved by Family Health Coordinator and noted on record.
  3. The Cook/Custodian complies with sanitation guidelines as recommended by the State of Missouri Health Department. Keeps area sanitary, clean, and orderly. Area includes: cooking appliances, utensils, dishes, kitchen, and serving area.
  4. The Cook/Custodian ensures the cleaning checklists is completed each day and kept on file.
  5. The Cook/Custodian cleans dining room tables, chairs, and floor in eating area before each meal and immediately after each meal using the assistance of other staff as needed.
  6. The Cook/Custodian maintains food service equipment in working condition. Reports any problems and repairs to Team Supervisor.
  7. The Cook/Custodian maintains all records and documentation pertaining to food services including purchase amounts of food, recording expenditures, and daily sanitation checklist.
  8. The Cook/Custodian addresses special diet needs for Head Start children in cooperation with Family Health Coordinator.
  9. The Cook/Custodian follows CACFP regulations for preparation, storage, and disposal of foods.

Custodian duties:

  1. The Cook/Custodian removes and dispose of all trash from restrooms, kitchen and classrooms.
  2. The Cook/Custodian sanitizes bathroom floors, sinks, and toilets.
  3. The Cook/Custodian stocks paper towels, toilet paper and hand soap.
  4. The Cook/Custodian sweeps and mops all floors daily.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS;

  1. High School or General Education Development (GED) diploma.
  2. Certificate in ServSafe or attain it within 30 days of employment required.
  3. Experience in preparing and serving food for large groups preferred.
  4. Experience with low-income families, child care, health, or education preferred.

OTHER REQUIRED CAPABILITIES AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Physically able to stand for long periods of time, as well as stooping, squatting, running, and lift an estimated 50 pounds.
  2. Able to navigate email, internet, Microsoft Word, and other computer database programs.
  3. Must have an active driver's license and will be required to travel in or out of community with own transportation.
