Job Location:

The Adobe Mountain School is a secure care juvenile correctional facility for the custody, treatment, rehabilitation, and education of committed youth. The Adobe Mountain School is fully accredited as a public education agency or school district and is located approximately 19 miles north of downtown Phoenix.

Job Summary:

The Arizona Department of Juvenile Corrections (ADJC) is seeking Cook 1 applicants who are passionate about their profession and who will be committed to making a difference in the lives of Arizona’s underserved youth. The Cook 1 will prepare, portion, cook, and present a variety of hot and/or cold food items for various meal periods to include Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, and Special/Catered Events. ADJC wants you to come to join our talented and diverse Food Service Team. At ADJC you will have the ability to collaborate in a team-oriented environment.

Job Duties:

1. Train, evaluate, guide, and monitor youth, vocational competencies, and appropriate behavior.
2. Perform crisis intervention with youth employees as necessary.
3. Write reports, maintain logs, and required documentation including the National School Lunch / Breakfast Program (NSLP/SBP).
4. Maintain a safe environment in the Food Services Division using appropriate Security protocols.
5. Maintain correct food safety and operating procedures in the kitchen facility as specified by required health codes.
6. Maintain and account for equipment and supplies, verifying and ordering proper quality and quantity in reference to posted standards.
7. Plan and produce all meals including special diets.
8. Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

Knowledge of:

1. The National School Lunch/Breakfast Program requirements.
2. Quantity of food production, food service equipment, and food delivery systems.
3. Foodservice sanitation regulations and safety codes.
4. Accounting and inventory methods.
5. Interview processes, evaluation methods, and procedures.
6. As demonstrated by working in a large volume food preparation kitchen cooking, maintaining inventory, food service sanitation regulations, and safety codes.

Skill in:

1. Basic math.
2. Competent use of computers.

Abilities In:

1. Learn Federal, State, and Agency rules and regulations.
2. Learn and follow agency policies and procedures.
3. Learn youth management and treatment techniques (crisis intervention).
4. Learn radio communications.
5. Learn security practices to include therapeutic crisis intervention, restraints, etc.
6. Learn educational vocational program requirements.
7. De-escalate youth behavior.
8. Work closely with adjudicated youth in a secure institutional setting.

Selective Preference(s):

The preferred candidate will have:

1. Experience working with adult or juvenile populations.
2. Working in a large scale (over 1,000 meals daily) kitchen.
3. Security practices to include therapeutic crisis intervention and restraints.
4. Educational vocational program requirements.
5. Juvenile training techniques.
6. Security practices and key control.
7. Bilingual skills in Spanish/English preferred but not required.

Pre-Employment Requirements:

1. Successful completion of a comprehensive background investigation, behavioral assessment, drug test, and a medical/physical examination. No Felony Convictions.
2. Food experience and working knowledge of food preparation from scratch to include soups, sauces, stocks, gravy, and plate presentation.
3. Requires possession of a valid Maricopa County food handler’s permit at the time of appointment.
4. Requires possession of, and ability to retain, a current valid Arizona-issued driver's license. Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license records checks, maintain acceptable driving records, and must complete any required driver training (see Arizona Administrative Code R2-10-207.12). No suspended licenses as this position requires occasional driving.

The COOK 1 positions participate in the Corrections Officer Retirement Plan (CORP).

1. CORP Tier 3 is a Defined Contribution, 401 (a) retirement plan.
2. New members have the opportunity to define their contribution amount.
3. Employer contributes a dollar-for-dollar match equal to 5% of a member's salary.
4. Employees are fully vested after 3 years of service.
