Job summary

Pierre Indian Learning Center is seeking a Kitchen Helper to prepare and serve meals while following nutrition guidelines, sanitation standards, and health regulations. Duties include cooking, serving, cleaning, and assisting with various kitchen tasks.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of volume food preparation, nutrition, and sanitation.
  • Short-course training in food preparation is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Adhere to CANS school lunch nutritional guidelines and Department of Health regulations.
  • Prepare assigned entrées and other meal items.
  • Grill foods such as hamburgers, bacon, eggs, and ham.
  • Operate deep-fat fryers and other commercial kitchen equipment safely.
  • Prepare and serve snack bar items.
  • Clean, peel, slice, and prepare fruits and vegetables.
  • Assist in preparing salads, desserts, and other menu items.
  • Scrape, wash, sanitize, and store dishes, utensils, and cookware.
  • Clean and sanitize kitchen work areas, equipment, and food preparation surfaces.
  • Supervise and assist student or resident workers on a limited basis.
  • Portion and serve food, and load food carts for meal service.
  • Bake cakes, cookies, breads, and other baked goods as assigned.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the Food Services Director.

Job Objective

Prepare and serve meals while ensuring compliance with nutritional guidelines, sanitation standards, and Department of Health regulations. Perform food preparation, serving, cleaning, and other kitchen duties as assigned.

Normal Work Schedule
  • 40 hours per week, as scheduled.
  • Schedule may include weekends and split shifts.
General Guidelines

The incumbent will work within the policies and procedures established by the Indian Board of Education for the Pierre Indian Learning Center (PILC). Work is performed under the general direction of the designated official of the Learning Center or his/her authorized representative.

Accountability

The incumbent is directly responsible to the supervisor listed above, or his/her successor, and is expected to exercise sound judgment and initiative in carrying out assigned duties.

In-Service Training Requirements

The incumbent shall attend all required training sessions for the Food Services Department and Center-wide staff development activities to broaden knowledge of PILC programs and operations and contribute to continuous program improvement.

The incumbent shall maintain a professional demeanor at all times and protect the confidentiality of students, staff, and all sensitive information in accordance with applicable policies and regulations.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to work in hot, cold, and fast-paced kitchen environments.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, reach, and perform repetitive hand and arm movements.
Working Conditions

Work is performed primarily in a commercial kitchen environment with exposure to heat, steam, sharp utensils, cleaning chemicals, and commercial food preparation equipment. Personal protective equipment (PPE) may be required.
