Job summary

Oakwood Heights Village is seeking dietary cooks to prepare meals in compliance with federal, state, and local sanitary regulations. The role includes creating nutritionally appropriate and appetizing meals, including modified diets prescribed by physicians.

Responsibilities include following menus, ensuring proper temperatures, reducing waste, and maintaining cleanliness. English literacy and the ability to read and follow directions are required; rotating shifts may be necessary.

Qualifications

  • Reads, writes, speaks English and follows written and oral directions.
  • Knowledge of volume food production methods and techniques.
  • Knowledge of sanitation regulations and practices in institutional kitchens.
  • Able to perform simple arithmetical calculations.
  • Able to solve operational problems when Dietary Manager is absent.

  • Avoids food waste using production sheets and meetings.
  • Maintains proper care of dietary equipment.

  • Monitors food temperatures and ensures proper storage and cleaning schedules.
  • Communicates with supervisors and collaborates with staff.
  • Provides high quality service in a caring atmosphere.

Duties of Dietary Cooks:
  • Handles and prepares food in accordance with federal, state and local sanitary regulations.
  • Prepares nutritionally appropriate and appetizing meals, including modified consistency and therapeutic diets, as prescribed by the attending physician.
  • Meets required meal schedules.
  • Takes accurate measures to avoid food waste, including participating in production meetings with supervisor(s) and use of production sheets.
  • Properly cares for dietary equipment.
  • Follows menus and special diet instructions.
  • Takes food temperatures per policy and insures food items are prepared, cooled and stored in adherence to corporate, local, state and federal guidelines. Follow cleaning schedules, and daily deep cleaning task.
  • Communicates freely with supervisor(s).
  • Cooperates with other dietary department staff.
  • Ensures that residents and families receive the highest quality of service in a caring and compassionate atmosphere which recognizes the individuals’ needs and rights.
  • Performs other duties as requested.
Other Duties of Dietary Cooks:
  • Interacts with residents, families, visitors, and center staff.
  • Carries out other tasks as requested in situations where hands‑on intervention/participation may be required.
  • Ability to read, write, speak and follow written and oral directions in the English language.
  • May be required to work rotating shifts, holidays, weekends, overtime and in different positions as facility’s needs require.
  • Must practice good personal hygiene and follow dress code requirements.
  • Must provide annual verification of a negative TB skin test.
Qualifications for Dietary Cooks:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience in institutional food handling is preferred.
  • Ability to read, write, speak and follow written and oral directions in the English language.
  • Knowledge of volume food production methods and techniques.
  • Knowledge of sanitation regulations and practices as applied to institutional kitchens and related areas.
  • Able to make simple arithmetical calculations.
  • Able to solve operational problems in absence of Dietary Manager and Assistant Dietary Manager.
  • Knowledge of dietetic principles.
