Job summary

The Salvation Army USA Central Territory is seeking a kitchen, dining, and inventory attendant to prepare nutritious meals, maintain clean facilities, and assist donors. You will supervise volunteers, track donations, and help ensure safe food handling and storage practices in a community program setting.

Qualifications include a high school diploma or equivalent, ServSafe certification (or within six months), and a Michigan driver’s license preferred.

  • Ensure kitchen equipment operates safely and effectively.
  • Receive, rotate, stock, and store food and supplies with proper handling.
  • Provide courteous assistance to donors and visitors; record in-kind donations.
  • Foster positive relationships with clients, volunteers, and staff; supervise kitchen volunteers.
  • Support departmental operations and perform other duties as assigned.

Job description

Job Objective

Prepare and serve nutritious meals for community and program participants while maintaining a safe, sanitary, and organized food service environment. Ensures kitchen equipment operates safely and effectively, including stoves, ovens, serving equipment, dishwashers, and garbage disposals.

Kitchen and Dining Environment
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization throughout the kitchen, dining area, food preparation areas, refrigerators, freezers, and storage spaces.
  • Wash, sanitize, and properly store dishes, utensils, equipment, and food service items.
  • Sweep, mop, and sanitize floors and work surfaces to ensure a clean and safe environment.
  • Remove trash and recyclables according to established procedures.
Inventory and Storage
  • Receive, rotate, stock, and store food and supplies using proper food handling and inventory practices.
  • Monitor food inventory levels and notify the supervisor of supply needs.
  • Ensure proper storage and labeling of food products.
Donor and Program Support
  • Provide courteous assistance to donors and visitors.
  • Offer receipts to donors when appropriate.
  • Accurately record in-kind donations and maintain related documentation.
Team Collaboration and Supervision
  • Foster positive working relationships with clients, donors, volunteers, and fellow employees.
  • Provide guidance and oversight to kitchen and dining room volunteers.
  • Support departmental operations and perform other duties as assigned.
Relationships
  • Maintain positive working relationships with fellow employees, clients and donors.
Minimum Qualifications

The requirements listed below are representative of the minimal education, experience, skills, and/or abilities required for this position.

Education

High school diploma or equivalent preferred.

Certifications

Current ServSafe Certification required, or must obtain within six months of employment.

Driver's License

Valid Michigan driver's license with clearance by the Salvation Army's insurance carrier preferred.

Experience
  • One year experience in food services, institutional cooking or related experience
  • -Or-
  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities

Compensation: $15.43-19.29/hour, based on experience.
