Job summary

BVCAP Head Start is seeking a dependable kitchen team member to prepare and serve nutritious meals across Head Start sites. You will follow Department of Health rules, Head Start Program Performance Standards, and standard recipes to produce age-appropriate meals.

Responsibilities include assembling food, maintaining sanitation, managing inventory, delivering meals, and supporting staff training. A high school diploma is required; some centers prefer an associate degree; CPR/First Aid and food

Qualifications

  • Must have a high school diploma; an associate degree is preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of large-scale food production.
  • Working knowledge of sanitation and safety procedures.
  • Working knowledge of inventory systems.
  • Driver license preferred in some centers.
  • Food handler's card required before employment.
  • Ability to obtain manager certification/food handler’s card within 90 days.
  • CPR & First Aid certification required within 30 days.
  • Position contingent on successful federal background check.

  • Orders and maintains supplies; receives vendor orders accurately.
  • Maintains food inventories and reconciles meal services monthly.
  • Assists with menu planning and staff training.

Job description

Job Summary:

Work as effective team member in each site as assigned. Prepare and maintain food at appropriate temperature, have knowledge or be willing to learn the Department of Health rules, regulation, and Head Start Program Performance Standards. Gain knowledge of proper food preparation, temperature control, sanitation, and portion sizes. Help to train new cooking staff. When applicable, and as assigned, substitute for other absent staff to insure appropriate nutritious age-appropriate meals are prepared in a Head Start program.


Duties and Responsibilities:


  1. Assembles food, dishes, utensils, and supplies needed for timely meal preparation.

  2. Prepares high-quality nutritional food, in quantity, as directed by the Child Adult Care food program.

  3. Follows standardized recipes.

  4. Adheres to sanitation and safety procedures prescribed for the Head Start kitchen.

  5. Assure that food temperatures are hot or cold enough and those kitchen areas are sanitary so that health standards are maintained.

  6. Washes dishes, pots, pans, and utensils using approved sanitation methods.

  7. Returns all items to their proper storage site.

  8. Completes routine maintenance of kitchen and equipment, including weekly deep cleaning

  9. Delivers meals to classrooms as assigned.

  10. Orders and maintains supplies as needed.

  11. Responsible for receiving orders from vendors, insuring that proper items have been delivered.

  12. Responsible for menu planning.

  13. Maintains food inventories.

  14. Reconciles meal services for submission to child adult care food program monthly.

  15. Ability to problem solve and respond appropriately to the unexpected (food shortages, equipment malfunctions, etc.) while adhering to meal schedules


Requirements

Qualifications:


  • Minimum of high school diploma (Associates of Arts degree preferred)

  • Strong knowledge of large-scale food production

  • Working knowledge of sanitation and safety procedures

  • Working knowledge of inventory systems.

  • Driver License preferred may be required in some centers.

  • Must have a food handlers' card prior to employment

  • Ability to obtain a manager certification food handler’s card within 90 days of hire.

  • Must be able to obtain CPR & First Aid certification within 30 days of employment.

  • Position is contingent upon the successful completion of a federal background check
