Job summary

Anthropic's Safeguards organization leads the policies, evaluations, and enforcement that govern how Claude can be used in the domain of conventional weapons. You will own the policy, build threat models, and work with engineering to implement guardrails and enforcement tools.

You will serve as the subject-matter expert on conventional weapons content, drive rapid risk response, and engage with external partners to strengthen policy and governance.

Qualifications

• Must have deep, applied expertise in weapons systems and translate complex technical evidence into policy judgments.
• Experience in research labs, defense agencies, or weapons-design companies is preferred.
• Ability to write clear, operational policy and explain complex topics to non-specialists.

Responsibilities

• Own and maintain conventional weapons policy, defining boundaries for model use.
• Build threat models and evaluations to measure policy impact on weapons development and autonomy components.
• Partner with engineering to translate policy into guardrails, detection, and enforcement tooling.
• Serve as expert for escalations involving conventional weapons content and rapid risk response.
• Communicate policy rationale across product, engineering, legal, and leadership.
• Engage external experts and government/industry partners to strengthen policy and enforcement.
