The Opportunity

The Controls Technician II performs startup, commissioning, testing, integration, troubleshooting, and support of automation and control systems at customer and project sites. Technicians at this level are given defined field work and are expected to determine the activities necessary to complete it with limited direction.

The role requires an understanding of how field equipment, PLC and SCADA systems, communications, and related systems interact to support overall system operation. Controls Technicians II independently resolve routine field and controls issues, recognize when problems extend beyond their assigned work, and communicate issues or risks that could affect successful startup or operation. They work with substantial independence, assist and interact with client needs, coordinate technical activities with others, and exercise judgment in determining when problems require additional expertise or broader involvement.

What You’ll Do
Core Responsibilities
  • Independently complete defined startup, commissioning, testing, integration, troubleshooting, and corrective-work assignments, determining the individual activities necessary to complete the assigned work.
  • Use drawings, procedures, technical documentation, field observations, and system information to verify operation and identify deviations from expected performance.
  • Apply an understanding of field equipment, PLC and SCADA systems, communications, and related systems to evaluate how problems or changes within assigned work may affect overall system operation.
  • Independently troubleshoot routine field and controls issues, identify likely causes, implement appropriate corrections, and engage additional expertise when problems extend beyond the assigned work or available information.
  • Document field conditions, test results, completed work, identified issues, corrective actions, and required follow-up accurately and completely.
  • Coordinate assigned field work with other technicians, engineers, project teams, customers, and trade partners as necessary for successful completion.
  • Identify and communicate problems and risks that could affect safety, equipment, system operation, schedule, or successful startup.
  • This position may require up to 100% overnight travel based on project and business needs. Employees are typically assigned to projects within their local or regional area when work is available; however, assignments may require extended travel to project sites outside the employee's home market. Travel may vary throughout the year from little or no travel during local assignments to full-time travel while supporting projects in other locations.
Collaboration & Communication
  • Coordinate assigned startup and commissioning activities with technicians, engineers, project teams, customers, vendors, and trade partners to align work, interfaces, schedule, and expected outcomes.
  • Communicate progress, decisions, problems, and risks clearly and early enough for others to respond appropriately.
  • Seek additional information or expertise when needed and incorporate input from others into troubleshooting and field technical decisions.
  • Communicate directly with customers and other project stakeholders regarding assigned field technical work and independently resolve routine questions and issues within the employee's area of responsibility.
  • Document and communicate technical findings, system conditions, corrective actions, and outstanding issues clearly and accurately.
Quality, Safety & Process
  • Follow company policies, quality requirements, startup and commissioning practices, and established work processes applicable to assigned work.
  • Follow all safety requirements, identify and communicate unsafe conditions, and stop or escalation work when necessary to protect people, equipment, or operations.
  • Apply appropriate checks, tests, and verification activities to confirm assigned systems and equipment operate as intended before work is considered complete.
  • Evaluate differences between expected and actual field conditions and take appropriate action before proceeding when those differences could affect safety, equipment, system operation, or successful startup.
  • Identify quality, safety, or field-execution issues and resolve them or engage others when additional expertise or authority is required.
Leadership & Organizational Influence
  • Contribute to a professional, collaborative, and respectful work environment and support others in achieving team and project goals.
  • Take responsibility for assigned outcomes, follow through on commitments, and demonstrate dependable technical and professional behavior in the field.
  • Share technical knowledge, field experience, troubleshooting approaches, and lessons learned with less experienced technicians and peers.
People Leadership
  • This role does not have formal responsibility for managing employees. Employees are expected to work effectively with others, share knowledge, and support the success and development of teammates.
What We’re Looking For
Education & Experience
  • Relevant technical education in controls, automation, electrical, electronics, engineering technology, information systems, or a related field; or equivalent practical experience.
  • Typically 2+ years of relevant experience, with demonstrated ability to independently complete defined startup, commissioning, testing, and troubleshooting work.
Skills & Qualifications
  • Working knowledge of startup, commissioning, testing, integration, and troubleshooting practices for automation and control systems.
  • Ability to read and apply drawings, specifications, procedures, technical documentation, and system information independently during field execution.
  • Working knowledge of field equipment, PLC and SCADA systems, communications, and related systems and the ability to evaluate how problems or changes within assigned work may affect overall system operation.
  • Ability to independently diagnose and resolve routine field and controls problems and recognize when a problem requires additional information, expertise, or authority.
  • Ability to learn and work effectively with new software, control platforms, equipment, and customer technologies. Proficiency with any single product or platform does not define advancement within the career track.
  • Clear verbal and written communication and the ability to coordinate effectively with technicians, engineers, project teams, customers, vendors, and trade partners.
  • Ability to organize assigned work, manage priorities and commitments, and identify and communicate risks before they unnecessarily affect execution.
  • Consistent application of safe work practices, quality expectations, technical documentation, and established processes.
What You’ll Get
  • Competitive compensation with annual bonus opportunity
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage with low-cost options
  • Paid time off and sick leave
  • Tuition reimbursement and professional credential support
  • In-house and external technical training opportunities
