Job summary

Controls Technician
About the Role

The Controls Technician is responsible for installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and supporting building automation and process control systems that are critical to CVI Laser Optics' manufacturing operations. This role supports reliable environmental controls, facility utilities, cleanroom monitoring, and equipment control systems within a precision manufacturing environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Configure, program, troubleshoot, and maintain building automation and control systems supporting HVAC, cleanroom, environmental monitoring, utilities, and manufacturing operations.
  • Install, wire, configure, and commission controllers, sensors, actuators, and other field devices using industrial communication protocols such as BACnet and Modbus TCP/IP.
  • Support PLC and automation systems, including troubleshooting control logic, inputs/outputs, communications, and equipment interfaces.
  • Diagnose and repair electrical and controls issues involving low-voltage wiring and 24V/120V control circuits.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on control panels, controllers, sensors, instrumentation, and associated equipment.
  • Support calibration and verification of environmental and process instrumentation, including temperature, humidity, differential pressure, and particle monitoring devices.
  • Monitor system alarms, trends, and operating data to identify issues and support proactive maintenance and reliability improvements.
  • Maintain controls documentation, including points lists, network architecture, control drawings, system backups, equipment records, and changes to sequences of operation.
  • Document work orders, preventive maintenance, and repairs within the site's CMMS.
  • Partner with Facilities, Maintenance, Engineering, Operations, and external vendors on equipment installations, system integrations, cleanroom monitoring improvements, and capital projects.
  • Respond to facility and equipment issues that could impact production, product quality, safety, or environmental conditions.
  • Follow applicable safety procedures, cleanroom requirements, and site standards.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Education & Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • 3–5 years of experience with building automation, industrial controls, instrumentation, or similar automation systems in a manufacturing, industrial, cleanroom, or commercial environment.
  • Technical education, certification, apprenticeship, or training in controls, automation, electrical, instrumentation, or a related field is a plus. Experience in cleanroom, semiconductor, optical, aerospace, medical device, or other precision manufacturing environments is a plus.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Working knowledge of PLCs, control logic, and industrial automation systems.
  • Knowledge of building automation or SCADA platforms such as Niagara, Ignition, or similar systems.
  • Knowledge of industrial communication protocols, including BACnet and Modbus TCP/IP.
  • Strong electrical and controls troubleshooting skills.
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting electrical drawings, control schematics, wiring diagrams, sequences of operation, and technical documentation.
  • Strong problem‑solving and root cause analysis skills.
  • Working knowledge of preventive maintenance and equipment reliability practices.
  • Strong attention to detail and documentation skills.
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills across technical and operational teams.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize work, and respond effectively to equipment or facility issues.
Physical Requirements & Work Environment

Regular work in a manufacturing and cleanroom environment, including required cleanroom gowning and contamination-control practices. Exposure to manufacturing equipment, moving mechanical parts, electrical systems, chemicals, fumes or airborne particles, and elevated noise levels. Work may involve varying temperatures and indoor and outdoor conditions while supporting facility and equipment needs. Required personal protective equipment must be worn based on the work being performed. Frequent standing, walking, bending, reaching, crouching, climbing, and use of hands and tools to perform maintenance and repair work. Work at heights, on ladders, and in confined or limited-access spaces may be required. Must be able to lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50 pounds as needed.
