Amazon is seeking a Controls System Engineer to support the Amazon Logistics North America (AMZL NA) Engineering team, part of Amazon’s Last Mile organization. The Last Mile team helps get customer packages from delivery stations to a customer’s doorstep.
We are looking for an individual who has experience creating scalable solutions to complex engineering problems. In this role, this individual will challenge current processes, equipment, procedures, and electrical/controls specifications in our delivery stations, in order to come up with creative and implementable process improvement initiatives with a focus on AB PLC/HMI, ignition, and vision systems continuous improvement. This Controls System Engineer will contribute to all aspects of an agile systems development life cycle including design, architecture, development, documentation, testing and operational sustainability. This position will be responsible for designing, managing and executing the next generation of delivery station processes, equipment, and operations. This is a unique opportunity to own new innovative projects that will advance the intelligence of our last mile business.
Key job responsibilities
As a Controls System Engineer on the AMZL NA World Wide Engineering and Innovation team, your day starts with a review of overnight alarm logs and KPI dashboards to prioritize site support needs. You may spend the morning on a call with a delivery station team troubleshooting a PLC fault on a sortation system, walking them through diagnostic steps or remotely accessing the controller to identify root cause.
By midday, you're collaborating with a cross‑functional project team — mechanical engineers, operations managers, and equipment vendors — in a design review for a new conveyor controls upgrade, providing input on I/O requirements, safety interlocks, and network architecture.
In the afternoon, you're on‑site at a delivery station commissioning a newly installed vision system: validating PLC logic, tuning sensor parameters, and running integration tests with the site operations team. Before wrapping up, you document lessons learned, update the controls standard, and flag a process improvement idea for your team's next sprint.
Your internal stakeholders include field engineering, site operations, and partner automation teams. The problems you solve directly impact package throughput, station uptime, and ultimately the customer delivery experience.
The World Wide Engineering and Innovation (WWEI) team within Amazon Logistics (AMZL) is responsible for designing, developing, and deploying next‑generation controls and automation solutions across North America's delivery station network. We sit at the intersection of field engineering and innovation — partnering closely with operations, central engineering, and upstream engineering innovation teams to drive measurable improvements in station throughput, uptime, and safety.
