Job summary

Jones Lang LaSalle (JLL) seeks a Controls SME for Data Center Operations in Amarillo, TX. You will maintain, program, and troubleshoot BAS and control systems that manage critical data center infrastructure in a 24/7 environment.

You will coordinate with mechanical and electrical teams to commission new systems, optimize energy use, and document configurations. On-site work and after-hours availability are expected.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years of experience with building automation systems and industrial controls.
  • Proficiency with major BAS platforms (Johnson Controls, Schneider Electric, Honeywell, Siemens, or Trane).
  • Strong knowledge of control system programming languages and configuration software.
  • Experience with BACnet, Modbus, and Ethernet/IP communications.
  • Ability to read and interpret control schematics, point lists, and sequence of operations.
  • Understanding of HVAC systems, electrical equipment, and mechanical systems operation.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills using laptops, network analyzers, and calibration tools.
  • Physical ability to work in mechanical rooms and lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Availability for on-call emergency response and flexible scheduling.
  • Valid driver's license.

Responsibilities

  • Program, configure, and maintain BAS including controllers, sensors, and actuators for HVAC and electrical systems.
  • Troubleshoot control system faults, communications, and sensor malfunctions with diagnostic tools.
  • Monitor and optimize control sequences for chillers, air handlers, UPS, and environmental monitoring.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on control panels, field devices, and networks.
  • Respond to critical control system alarms with technical intervention.
  • Create and modify control graphics, trending reports, and alarm notifications.
  • Coordinate with mechanical/electrical teams to commission new controls and upgrades.
  • Maintain documentation of configurations, changes, and procedures.
  • Support energy management initiatives through control optimization.

Job description

Controls SME - Data Center Operations

As a Controls SME at JLL, you will be responsible for maintaining, programming, and troubleshooting building automation systems (BAS) and control systems that manage critical data center infrastructure. You will work with sophisticated control networks that monitor and control HVAC systems, electrical equipment, fire safety systems, and security systems to ensure optimal performance and reliability of mission‑critical facilities. This role requires expertise in multiple control platforms and the ability to integrate complex systems that operate continuously in a 24/7 environment.

Your day-to-day tasks will include:
  • Program, configure, and maintain building automation systems (BAS) including controllers, sensors, and actuators for HVAC and electrical systems.
  • Troubleshoot control system faults, communication issues, and sensor malfunctions using specialized diagnostic tools and software.
  • Monitor and optimize control sequences for chillers, air handlers, UPS systems, and environmental monitoring equipment.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on control panels, field devices, and communication networks to ensure reliable operation.
  • Respond to critical control system alarms and equipment failures with immediate technical intervention.
  • Create and modify control graphics, trending reports, and alarm notifications for facility monitoring systems.
  • Coordinate with mechanical and electrical teams to commission new control systems and integrate equipment upgrades.
  • Maintain detailed documentation of control system configurations, programming changes, and troubleshooting procedures.
  • Support energy management initiatives through control system optimization and advanced control strategies.
Incident Management
  • Be the first point of contact for service‑impacting events involving the controls systems.
  • Assist the team in troubleshooting and mitigating incidents.
  • Assist in the creation of root cause analysis (RCAs).
  • Be available for after‑hours support regarding the control systems, including 24/7 responses.
Desired experience and technical skills – Requirements

  • Experience with network protocols including BACnet, Modbus, and Ethernet/IP communications.
  • Ability to read and interpret control schematics, point lists, and sequence of operations.
  • Understanding of HVAC systems, electrical equipment, and mechanical systems operation.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills using laptops, network analyzers, and field calibration equipment.
  • Physical ability to work in mechanical rooms, above‑ceiling spaces, and lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Availability for on‑call emergency response and flexible scheduling.
  • Valid driver's license.
Preferred
  • Data center or mission‑critical facility experience.
  • Experience with DCIM (Data Center Infrastructure Management) systems.
  • Knowledge of energy management systems and advanced control strategies.
  • Industry certifications (Johnson Controls, Schneider Electric, Honeywell, etc.).
  • Associate degree in Electronics, Controls Technology, or related field.
  • Experience with fire alarm systems, security systems, and life safety controls.
  • Programming experience with scripting languages (Python, VBA) for system integration.
