Job Title: Controls Project Engineer
Job Description
We are seeking a Controls Project Engineer I to support the North American Amazon RMR team. Vanderlande’s Amazon RMR team handles the design, specification, and commissioning of Amazon RMR projects across North America.
Vanderlande’s Controls Engineering team is responsible for designing, programming, commissioning, and testing material handling systems. This is not an entry-level position. As a Controls Project Engineer 1, you will be responsible for designing and commissioning/testing both small and large-scale material handling systems that integrate hardware and software components. You should be able to work independently to achieve project milestones and system success.
Key Responsibilities:
- Review electrical drawings, lists, and specifications to align PLC design
- Review third-party equipment mechanical and electrical interfaces to align PLC design
- Write detailed design documents
- Review safety layouts and specifications to ensure PLC design compliance
- Review 480 VAC, 24 VDC, IO layouts, and system specifications to align PLC design
- Develop and test SCADA/HMI programs
- Write, debug, and test PLC code
- Provide remote customer support and commissioning assistance
- Document progress and conduct peer reviews of PLC design elements
- Attend Controls SCURM meetings regularly
- Create PLC design sheets, write position papers, and develop various system diagrams and plans
- Configure devices, perform device and zone level testing, and document testing procedures
- Identify and troubleshoot network communication issues and electrical problems
- Manage and execute punch lists
- Monitor subcontractor progress and ensure safety compliance
- Perform system testing and documentation for PLC and SCADA commissioning
Required Qualifications:
- Willingness to learn and proactive attitude
- Ownership culture and effective communication skills
- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or Technology
- Willingness to travel up to 50% or more as needed
- Knowledge of Windows and computer systems
- Ability to work independently and in teams
- Minimum 2 years’ experience with material handling or industrial controls systems
- Skills in ladder logic, Allen-Bradley Studio 5000, Siemens TIA-Portal, HMI design, and communication protocols
- Familiarity with electrical design, AutoCAD, and PLC hardware/software support
- Strong problem-solving and networking skills
Desired Qualifications:
- Understanding of electrical hardware design, power distribution, and safety standards
- Programming skills in SQL, Visual Basic, C, C++, or C#
- Experience in project management or team leadership
- Excellent communication skills and ability to work collaboratively
- Knowledge of NEC, NFPA 70/79, OSHA regulations, and mechanical design
- Familiarity with VI WoW and PM 2.0, and mechanical design related to material handling
- Master’s Degree in Engineering or Technology
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to climb ladders, walk, lift up to 30 lbs, and work in various environments
- Comfortable working in an office and factory setting
