Job summary

McKinstry in Tampa, FL is seeking a seasoned Controls Manager to lead Building Automation Systems programs for our facility operations client teams.

This role oversees vendor performance, acts as primary POC, and coordinates augmented staff to deliver safe, efficient, and compliant BAS solutions.

You will travel up to 50%, mentor engineers, review drawings, and drive project success from pre-construction through commissioning, with a focus on reliability and energy management.

Qualifications

  • Mechanical or Electrical engineering degree or equivalent.
  • 10+ years of BAS/controls experience including programming and energy management.
  • 3+ years leading large-scale projects and strong project management skills.
  • Willingness to travel up to 50%.
  • Niagara certification or experience; familiarity with AX/N4, Distech, BACnet.

  • Coordinate vendor activities to ensure quality, timeliness, and proper documentation.
  • Serve as the main POC between Client Maintenance, Construction, and all controls vendors.

The Opportunity with McKinstry

McKinstry is looking for a Controls Manager to support our growing Facility Operations team in Tampa, FL. The Controls Manager shall serve as our client's primary point of contact (POC) for all matters related to Building Automation Systems (BAS), including vendor performance, augmented staff and client construction team coordination. This role will act in a leadership and oversight capacity and will not replace individual contractor responsibilities but will ensure accountability, quality control, and alignment with client expectations. Additional responsibilities may include:

Vendor Oversight & Governance
  • Oversee all BAS controls vendors operating within the client portfolio.
  • Monitor vendor performance for quality, timeliness, and proper documentation.
  • Coordinate vendor activities to prevent scope gaps, duplication of effort, or system conflicts.
  • Assist client in resolving escalated technical or contractual issues involving vendors.
  • Audit quotes/work performed by vendors to ensure fiscal responsibility.
District Liaison / Primary Point of Contact
  • Serve as the main POC between Client Maintenance, Construction, and all controls vendors.
  • Provide technical guidance to client staff regarding BAS infrastructure, integration, and operational strategy.
  • Support troubleshooting escalation when issues span multiple vendors or systems.
  • Communicate client priorities to vendors to ensure alignment with operational needs.
Oversight and Utilization of Augmented/Client BAS Staff
  • Supervise and coordinate client-hired augmented controls personnel.
  • Assign and prioritize daily and weekly tasks aligned with client operational goals.
  • Ensure augmented staff are deployed efficiently to support service, programming, graphics, and commissioning needs.
  • Evaluate workload distribution to maximize productivity and responsiveness.
  • Establish performance metrics and accountability standards.
Pre-Construction & Referendum Project Support
  • Serve as the controls Pre-Construction POC for referendum and capital improvement projects.
  • Participate in design review meetings to ensure BAS scope completeness and client standards compliance.
  • Review drawings and specifications for constructability and integration consistency.
  • Identify potential integration conflicts prior to construction.
  • Ensure controls scope aligns with client front-end platform standards.
What You Need To Succeed at McKinstry
  • Mechanical or Electrical engineering degree or equivalent work experience in the built environment.
  • 10+ years of BAS/controls experience, especially programming, integration, and energy management and 3 years’ experience leading large scale projects.
  • Excellent controls project management and people skills.
  • Willingness to travel up to 50%.
  • Understanding of building efficiency and basic design principles and standards.
  • Familiarity with IT troubleshooting in support of BAS networks.
  • Certification or experience in Niagara required; experience with AX, N4, Distech, and BACnet strongly preferred.

The pay range for this position is $120,555 - $183,255 per year; however, base pay offered may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. A bonus may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the position offered. Base pay information is based on market location.
