Job summary

AAM invites a motivated student to join as the Controls & IT College Co-Op in Fort Wayne, Indiana. This role blends controls engineering and IT responsibilities to gain hands-on experience with automation systems, industrial controls, and IT infrastructure in a fast-paced manufacturing setting.

You will work on troubleshooting, PLC programming, robot tasks, and IT support while contributing to continuous improvement and process optimization initiatives. This paid co-op requires 25+ hours weekly.

Qualifications

  • Enrolled fulltime in an accredited college pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, or related field.
  • Graduation date may 2027 or later.
  • Available to work minimum 25 hours per week year-round.
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA required.
  • Basic understanding of PLCs and industrial automation.
  • Familiarity with electrical systems and schematics.
  • Networking fundamentals knowledge.
  • Experience with Windows OS and Microsoft Office Suite.

Responsibilities

  • Troubleshoot PLCs, HMIs, and automated equipment (Allen-Bradley, Siemens).
  • Contribute to machine uptime by diagnosing electrical and controls issues.
  • Participate in PLC programming updates and documentation.
  • Assist with robot programming and troubleshooting.
  • Support preventive maintenance on automated systems.
  • Assist with continuous improvement and process optimization projects.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Provide IT shop-floor support for PCs, printers, scanners, and label machines.

The Controls & IT Co-Op will support both the Controls Engineering and Information Technology in a fast-paced manufacturing environment. This role provides hands-on experience in automation systems, industrial controls, and IT infrastructure while contributing to continuous improvement, troubleshooting, and system optimization initiatives.

Responsibilities
Controls / Automation Support
  • Assist in troubleshooting PLCs, HMIs, and automated equipment (e.g., Allen-Bradley, Siemens)
  • Support machine uptime by helping diagnose electrical and controls-related issues
  • Participate in PLC programming updates and documentation
  • Assist with robot programming and troubleshooting
  • Support preventative maintenance activities on automated systems
  • Help implement continuous improvement and process optimization projects
  • All other duties as assigned
IT Support
  • Provide support for shop floor for PCs, printers, scanners, label machines, radios, etc.
  • Assist with network troubleshooting for connectivity, IP configurations, etc.
  • Support user account management for all team members to also include permissions, access.
  • Help maintain IT documentation, asset tracking, and system backups
  • Assist with software installations, updates, and cybersecurity best practices, and IT4.
  • All other duties as required.
Required Skills and Education
