Job summary

Hydro Resources is seeking an Automation/Controls Field Technician 3 to perform field-service installation, wiring, maintenance, testing, startup, and repair of electrical, instrumentation, telemetry, VFD, and control systems for commercial water wells and pumping systems.

The role requires independent work with safety focus, advanced troubleshooting, and the ability to travel to remote sites as needed.

Qualifications

• 2+ years of field-service experience in electrical controls or pumping systems.
• Valid driver's license with clean driving record.
• Current DOT physical for CMV operation when required.

Responsibilities

Automation/Controls Field Technician 3

Summary:

The Automation/Controls Field Technician 3 is an intermediate field-service position responsible for performing installation, wiring, maintenance, troubleshooting, testing, startup, and repair of electrical, instrumentation, telemetry, VFD, and control systems associated with commercial water wells and pumping systems. Building upon the capabilities of Technicians 1 and 2, the Technician 3 is expected to perform assigned work safely and efficiently with increased independence and without direct supervision for tasks within demonstrated competency.

The Technician 3 performs field wiring and supports configuration and startup of submersible water-well pumping systems; installs and wires variable frequency drives (VFDs); works with electrical and electronic systems; and applies knowledge of telemetry, communications, PLC, HMI, and SCADA systems. The position also supports drill-rig electrical systems and assists with the configuration and startup of well-testing equipment.

This position requires increased responsibility for troubleshooting, electrical safety, PPE, field documentation, company equipment, and customer service. The Technician 3 is expected to recognize and help resolve field hazards, maintain required safety and technical qualifications, and continue developing the technical knowledge and independent troubleshooting skills necessary for progression to higher Automation/Controls Technician levels.

Responsibilities:

• Perform field-service work involving commercial water-well pumping systems, electrical controls, instrumentation, telemetry, VFDs, and related electrical and mechanical equipment.
• Perform assigned installation, wiring, maintenance, testing, troubleshooting, repair, and startup of pumps, motors, control panels, instrumentation, telemetry devices, and associated electrical equipment.
• Perform field wiring and supervise or support the configuration and startup of submersible water-well pumps within demonstrated competency.
• Install and wire VFDs, including systems utilizing external filters.
• Use and apply basic knowledge of typical VFD parameters when installing, testing, troubleshooting, and servicing VFD systems.
• Work with Eaton, Yaskawa, Baker Hughes, and Danfoss VFDs and apply a basic understanding of their drive parameters.
• Use voltmeters, ammeters, ohmmeters, megohmmeters, and other applicable electrical test equipment to perform electrical testing and troubleshooting.
• Apply basic electronics theory, including Ohm's Law, inductance, and capacitance, when performing electrical and controls work.
• Apply basic knowledge of Ethernet and serial communications, including RS-232 and RS-485, when installing and troubleshooting control and communication systems.
• Perform and assist with advanced telemetry and communication activities involving isolation, noise reduction, and system interfaces.
• Assist with the use and development of mechanical drawings using applicable drawing packages such as AutoCAD, Electra, or similar software.
• Assist with the use and development of basic electrical drawings using applicable drawing packages such as AutoCAD, Electra, or similar software.
• Perform basic PLC programming using company-supported platforms such as DirectSOFT, Allen-Bradley, or similar systems within demonstrated competency.
• Perform basic HMI programming using company-supported platforms such as C-more, IDEC, Siemens, or similar systems within demonstrated competency.
• Perform basic SCADA communication setup, support, testing, and troubleshooting.
• Install and maintain drill-rig electrical systems with direction from senior personnel as required.
• Assist with configuration and startup of well-testing and related test equipment.
• Apply basic telemetry knowledge involving pressure transmitters, flow meters, and related instrumentation.
• Apply basic hydraulic theory and use pump curves when assisting with water-well and pumping-system troubleshooting and service.
• Assist with installation and service of valves, meters, and other components in plumbed water systems.
• Assist drilling operations with drill-rig electrical work in the field.
• Maintain an assigned service vehicle for service calls during and outside normal business hours when assigned.
• Participate in emergency callouts and rotating service schedules as assigned.
• Use CRM and other company reporting systems to document work activities and required job information.
• Maintain detailed and accurate daily work records, vehicle reports, safety reports, service documentation, and other required company records.
• Collect and complete required information for the billing process, including applicable RFQ, purchase order, insurance, contractor, labor, material, and job information.
• Properly organize and store documentation, including schematics, programs, bills of materials, estimates, and other job or project records.
• Maintain assigned tools, electrical test equipment, PPE, safety equipment, and company-issued equipment in safe and serviceable condition.
• Participate in Hazard Recognition and develop or recommend solutions to help eliminate identified hazards.
• Follow Lockout/Tagout requirements, the Hydro HSE Manual, company safety procedures, and customer-site safety requirements.
• Travel to customer locations, water-well sites, drilling locations, and remote jobsites, including out-of-state locations, as assigned.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

• Possess a valid driver's license without restrictions that would prevent the performance of assigned job duties or operation of assigned company vehicles.
• Maintain a good driving record that meets company requirements.
• Maintain a current DOT Physical for CMV operation when required for assigned vehicle or equipment operation.
• Maintain all company-required equipment certificates applicable to assigned duties.
• Maintain all company-required LMS Safety Training and Courses.
• Have a minimum of 2+ years of applicable experience.
• Trade School education or training as identified by the Controls Capabilities Matrix.
• Have completed Green to White Hard Hat Safety Training.
• Maintain a current CPR Certificate.
• Maintain the current NFPA 70E Arc Flash Certificate.
• Be familiar with and fully understand the Hydro HSE Manual as required for the assigned Technician level.
• Understand and follow applicable Lockout/Tagout requirements.
• Maintain required PPE and safety equipment.
• Have working knowledge of power tools and hand tools used in electrical, controls, pumping, construction, and field-service work.
• Have working knowledge of equipment and hauling applicable to assigned field-service activities.
• Have knowledge of and ability to use voltmeters, ammeters, ohmmeters, megohmmeters, and related electrical test equipment.
• Have electrical and construction knowledge and experience appropriate to the assigned level.
• Understand Arc Flash concepts and applicable electrical safety requirements.
• Understand and use CRM and other company-required reporting systems.

Working Conditions:

• Work is performed in both shop and field environments, including customer facilities, commercial water-well sites, drilling locations, pump facilities, well fields, and remote jobsites.
• Work may be performed outdoors in varying weather and environmental conditions, including heat, cold, wind, rain, dust, mud, and uneven terrain.
• Normal work hours are Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with a one-hour lunch; however, field hours may vary based on project schedules, customer requirements, travel, and service needs, up to 12 hours a day.
• Must be available for emergency callouts, after-hours service, rotating schedule coverage, occasional weekend work, and extended work hours as assigned.
• Travel to local and remote jobsites is required and may include overnight and out-of-state travel based on business and project needs.
• May be assigned a company service vehicle for service calls during and outside normal business hours.
• Work may involve loading, unloading, transporting, and hauling tools, materials, test equipment, and other equipment required for field-service activities.
• Work may be performed around operating pumps, motors, electrical equipment, VFDs, control panels, instrumentation, drilling equipment, generators, heavy machinery, and other industrial equipment.
• Work may involve exposure to electrical hazards, mechanical equipment, noise, dust, water, chemicals, and other conditions normally associated with commercial water-well drilling, pumping, construction, and field-service operations.
• Required PPE and company safety procedures must be followed while working in shop, field, drilling, and customer-site environments.
• Work may require entering confined or restricted work areas, climbing ladders or equipment, and working around excavations or other field conditions when properly trained, authorized, and equipped.
• Company service vehicles, tools, electrical test equipment, and other equipment may be provided when assigned by management and must be maintained in safe and serviceable condition.
• Must comply with the Hydro HSE Manual, NFPA 70E requirements, Lockout/Tagout requirements, company HSE procedures, customer-site safety requirements, and applicable safe-work procedures at all times.
