What You Will Do

The Integrated Weapons Experiments (J) Division’s Engineering Operations and Physics (J‑6) Group is seeking a Controls Engineer Post‑Bachelor Student to support accelerator control system software and hardware for the Dual‑Axis Radiographic Hydrodynamic Test (DARHT) Facility. The role involves collaborating with a multidisciplinary team of scientists, engineers, technologists, and technicians on DARHT projects and programs while receiving training on the specialized software and hardware used across both accelerators. Core responsibilities include physics, diagnostics and data acquisition, controls, timing, pulsed power, mechanical systems, and operations essential to DARHT’s accelerators, along with R&D to advance accelerator capabilities.

Minimum Job Requirements
  • Control Systems: Familiarity with common electronic/electrical test equipment; knowledge of data acquisition systems and creative problem‑solving.
  • Programming: Experience with high‑level languages and control system software in a Microsoft Windows environment.
  • Engineering: Demonstrated knowledge in electrical engineering, electrical drawings, one‑line diagrams, and electrical circuits.
  • Communication: Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills; ability to interact with all levels of personnel and customers; experience collaborating across organizational boundaries.
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree from an ABET‑accredited institution, earned within the last three years in Electrical Engineering.
  • GPA: Cumulative GPA of 2.75 or above on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent).
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with electronics and typical laboratory equipment such as oscilloscopes and digital multimeters.
Essential Job Functions
  • Ability to speak, discriminate speech, and hear in a normal range (500 to 3000 Hz).
  • Physical tasks: sitting, standing, walking, typing or keyboarding, lifting and carrying 5–10 pounds.
Work Environment

Outdoors, in confined spaces, at heights, underground, working alone, working overtime or irregular schedule, domestic/foreign travel, operation of motor vehicles.

Exposure to weapons or explosives, vibrating equipment/machinery, moving parts, toxic and irritant chemicals, dusts, powders, sprays, mists, vapors, fumes, carcinogens.

Required personal protective equipment: hearing protection, gloves or hand protection, safety shoes, headgear, safety glasses or eye protection, face shield, mask or respirator.

Work Location

Onsite in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Clearance
