Job description

Responsibilities

Core responsibilities include physics, diagnostics, data acquisition, controls, timing, pulsed power, mechanical systems, and operations essential to DARHT’s accelerators. The group also conducts R&D to advance accelerator capabilities. In this role, the selected candidate will collaborate with a diverse team of scientists, engineers, technologists, and technicians on DARHT projects and programs, while receiving training on the specialized software and hardware used across both accelerators.

Qualifications
  • Control Systems: Familiarity with common electronic/electrical test equipment, knowledge of data acquisition systems, and application of creative problem‑solving.
  • Programming: Experience with high‑level languages and control system software in Microsoft Windows environment.
  • Engineering: Demonstrated knowledge in electrical engineering, electrical drawings, one‑line diagram, electrical circuits.
  • Communication: Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills, ability to interact with all levels of personnel and customers, and experience with collaboration across organizational boundaries.
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree from an ABET‑accredited institution within the last 3 years in Electrical Engineering.
  • Academic Performance: Cumulative GPA of 2.75 or above on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent).
  • Desired Qualifications: Experience with electronics and typical laboratory equipment such as oscilloscopes and DVMs.
Essential Job Functions

Ability to speak, discriminate speech, hear in a normal range (500 to 3000 Hz), sit, stand, walk, type or keyboard, lift 5–10 pounds, carry 5–10 pounds.

Work Environment

Outdoors, confined space, heights, underground, working alone, overtime or irregular schedule, domestic/foreign travel, operation of motor vehicles, work with weapons or explosives, vibrating equipment or machinery, work near moving machinery, toxic chemicals, irritant chemicals, dusts or powders, sprays, mists, vapors, fumes, carcinogens, hearing protection, gloves or hand protection, safety shoes or protective foot‑gear, headgear or head protection, safety glasses or eye protection, face shield or facial protection, mask or respirator.

Work Location

On‑site in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management. The facility is located in beautiful northern New Mexico.

Eligibility Restrictions

Due to federal restrictions, citizens of the People's Republic of China—including the special administrative regions of Hong Kong and Macau—as well as citizens of the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea), and the Russian Federation who are not lawful permanent residents (“green‑card” holders) are prohibited from accessing facilities that support the mission, functions, and operations of national security laboratories and nuclear weapons production facilities, including Los Alamos National Laboratory.

Additional Details

Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating the employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. This requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Security Clearance

Position will be cleared to Q level. Applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance, and obtaining such clearance requires U.S. citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Depending on the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required.

Drug Test

The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new‑employment drug test and maintains a substance‑abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, its use and possession remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre‑offer.

Internal Applicants

Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the required period of continuous service, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader.
