Job summary

Pratt Miller is seeking a mid‑level Controls Engineer to support vehicle controls, software development, electronics integration and system commissioning. The role focuses on developing control algorithms for electrified and unmanned platforms, with exposure to prototype vehicles and multi-domain modeling.

Ideal candidates have 3+ years of engineering experience and strong skills in MATLAB/Simulink, CAN tools, and hardware-in-the-loop testing. This is an on-site position in New Hudson, MI.

Qualifications

  • BS or MS in relevant engineering fields with 3+ years of experience.
  • Experience defining control architectures and implementing algorithms.
  • Proficiency with MATLAB/Simulink and model-based development.
  • Knowledge of CAN, Ethernet, LIN, Wireless protocols; vehicle electrification.

Responsibilities

  • Define controls architecture, platform, and functionality in Simulink.
  • Develop and test control algorithms for prototype systems.
  • Integrate and commission prototype vehicles and subsystems.
  • Model multi-domain mechanical, hydraulic, and electronic systems.
  • Analyze performance metrics and validate models vs data.

Our range of research & development, engineering, prototype manufacturing, test & validation, and low-rate production capability help our customers bring their high-quality products to market faster.**The Controls Engineer will support vehicle controls and software development, electronics integration, and system commissioning. The Controls Engineer will utilize fundamental engineering knowledge and practices to support design and development of control algorithms. Performs assignments with minimal instruction and guidance from senior level engineers and managers. You will support the development of prototype and concept vehicles, with a strong focus on vehicle electrification, autonomous vehicles, and unmanned vehicle platforms.**ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND SKILLS:** Typical responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:* Controls Development + Define controls architecture, platform, and functionality + Defines and creates control algorithms for specific systems in a Simulink environment + Develop and test controls performance through modeling, bench, and vehicle testing + Integration and commissioning of prototype systems in development vehicles* System Simulation and Modeling + Formulate multi-domain models of mechanical, hydraulic, and electronic systems + Analyze important performance metrics and system specifications from model results + Model correlation and validation to test data + Use models to develop and test controls algorithms* System Hardware Specification + Support design, selection, and integration of electronic components + Communicate mechanical requirements of system to design staff + Identify controller hardware to meet I/O and computational requirements + Communicate wiring and connector requirements to support harness builds**ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:** In addition to the responsibilities mentioned above, tasks relating to the following area will be assigned as required.* Interaction with current and potential customers regarding Pratt Miller systems* Planning and program management on internal and customer projects* Education / training* Provide feedback on product needs and processes* Strong technical writing, communication, team, and organizational skills* Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Project, PowerPoint)* Be a team player* Have great attention to detail* Strong verbal and written communication skills**EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION/YEARS OF EXPERIENCE:*** BS or MS in Automotive, Mechanical, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or Mechatronic Systems* 3+ years of engineering experience**DESIRED SPECIALIZED SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:*** MATLAB, Simulink, and Stateflow* Development Software and Tools for Embedded Systems + MotoTron/MotoHawk + Raptor + OpenECU + dSPACE MABX* CAN Tools + Vector CANape + Vector CANalyzer + Kvaser CanKing* Vehicle level simulation + CarSim/ TruckSim + ADAMS + Dymola* Data acquisition hardware and software experience* Vehicle and system troubleshooting experience* Knowledge of automotive, robotics, defense, or motorsports industries* Communication protocols (CAN, Ethernet, LIN, Wireless 802.11, DSRC)* Electric and Hybrid vehicle architecture* Electrical/Mechanical/Hydraulic/Pneumatic system design and simulation* Autonomous and by-wire design* Actuator controls (motors, valves)* Embedded C code development**PHYSICAL DEMANDS:*** Position requires light physical activity**EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK:*** Daytime schedule Monday-Friday with infrequent night/weekend work for project surge support and additional effort as needed to achieve deadlines* Some travel as required or on-site customer work**Pay Range:**$79,300.00 - $126,900.00
