Job summary

Lonza is seeking a Controls Engineer, Level 3, to support on-site manufacturing and process automation at our Portsmouth, NH site. You will develop and troubleshoot automation systems to meet production needs and support quality objectives.

The role requires a 5–10 year track record, proficiency in PLC/HMI platforms, and experience with SCADA and data historians. You will work independently and as part of a team to drive process improvements and ensure compliance.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or Computer Science required; STEM strongly preferred.
• 5-10 years of related work experience.
• Strong proficiency in PLC programming (Emerson DeltaV, Rockwell, Siemens) and HMI development (FactoryTalk View, Wonderware).
• Experience with SCADA systems, data historians (OSI PI), and industrial protocols (Ethernet/IP, Profibus, Modbus).
• Solid understanding of cGMP regulations and GAMP 5 guidelines.
• Proven ability to troubleshoot complex automation systems and perform root cause analysis.
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

• Develop technical knowledge on manufacturing equipment and processes automation systems.
• Support resolution of equipment breakdowns and quality issues in the suites.
• Conduct troubleshooting and technical analyses on manufacturing equipment and processes automation systems including PI data analyses, review/troubleshooting code, etc.
• Assist with tech transfer, projects and process improvements as needed.
• Perform all work safely and meet the requisite training requirements.
• Initiates change controls and participates in all aspects of the change controls process.
• Complete change request lot assessments to support lot release.

The Controls Engineer supports ongoing Lonza operations through technical assistance as it relates to the manufacturing and process automation systems. Provides a technical resource to operations customers to ensure that instrumentation and automation systems are designed and operating to meet production needs.
