The Controls Engineer will be responsible for overseeing the design and development, implementation, and optimization of control systems and automation processes. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience with AB CompactLogix and ControlLogix systems, programming, and a strong background in managing automation projects from concept to completion. The role requires maintenance and support of controls systems and the ability to troubleshoot control systems to support operations during unplanned downtime events.

Key Responsibilities
  • Project Leadership: Lead automation projects, ensuring they are delivered on time, within scope, and meet performance requirements.
  • System Design: Develop and implement control system architecture using AB CompactLogix and ControlLogix platforms, ensuring reliability and efficiency.
  • Technical Expertise: Provide expert guidance on best practices for automation, controls, and system integration.
  • Troubleshooting: Identify and resolve issues related to control systems and automation processes, ensuring minimal downtime and optimal performance.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with cross‑functional teams, including production, maintenance, and quality assurance, to align automation strategies with business goals.
  • Documentation: Maintain comprehensive documentation for control systems, including design specifications, user manuals, and maintenance procedures.
  • Continuous Improvement: Evaluate existing automation processes and technologies, recommending improvements to enhance productivity and efficiency.
Qualifications
  • ABET‑accredited bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Computer, Automation, Process, Chemical, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field. Equivalent experience in lieu of a degree may be considered.
  • Prefer 3+ years of experience with controls and automation, with a strong focus on AB CompactLogix and ControlLogix systems.
  • Proven experience leading automation projects in a manufacturing or industrial environment.
  • Strong knowledge of PLC programming, HMI development, and industrial communication protocols.
  • Excellent problem‑solving and analytical skills.
  • Strong leadership and team‑management abilities.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience with AC/DC motors and controllers, control circuits, computers, VFDs, and MCCs.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and engineering documents.
  • Ability to install and maintain process instrumentation including sensors, transmitters, controllers and final control elements for measurement and control of temperature, pressure, level, and flow.
  • Professional certifications related to automation and control systems are a plus.

Work Environment/Physical Demands/Travel
  • Typical production environment with loud noise levels and moving equipment.
  • Exposure to hazardous chemicals used in blending, packaging, and distribution.
  • Requires sitting, standing, walking, reaching, climbing, stooping, talking, seeing, hearing, and using hands/wrists for extended periods.
  • Ability to author reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Application of mathematical concepts such as frequency distribution, test reliability, and analysis of variance.
  • Application of logic and scientific thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Work near moving machinery, at heights, with limited exposure to fumes, airborne particles, toxic chemicals, outdoor weather conditions, risk of electrical shock, vibration, and extreme temperatures.
  • Limited travel (<20%) required.
