Job summary

thyssenkrupp Forged Technologies in Virginia is seeking a Controls Engineer to troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair plant equipment to minimize downtime. You will support electronics, controls, and automation projects, with heavy emphasis on PLCs, machine software, and drawings.

The role requires a Bachelor’s in Electrical Engineering and at least 3 years of experience in an industrial setting. Shift is 2-2-3 rotation; salary range is $80,000–$95,000 annually.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or related field.
• Minimum 3 years of experience troubleshooting electronic controls in a manufacturing setting.
• Strong knowledge of electronics and machine controls including Fanuc, Siemens, ABB, and Allen Bradley systems.
• Ability to read schematics and machine software; proficient with MS Office.
• Excellent communication and teamwork skills; able to work independently when needed.

Responsibilities

• Troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair plant equipment to minimize downtime.
• Program and diagnose machine faults; support PLC and control system changes.
• Document changes to electrical drawings and generate updated schematics.
• Prepare daily logs and track off-shift activity for follow-up.
• Assist with special projects, machine function additions, and equipment repairs.
• Work inside machines as needed for inspection and component replacement.

Salary range based on experience & education: $80,000 - $95,000 / annual

Shift: 2-2-3 rotation, 5a-5p

The Controls Engineer is primarily responsible for hands-on troubleshooting, diagnosing, and repairing plant equipment to minimize downtime and support reliable production. The position also supports special electronics, controls, and automation projects as needed.

• Troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair plant equipment involving checking voltages, changing out bad components, cables, switching out gauges, as well as making camera and software adjustments
• PLCs troubleshooting, programing and diagnose machine faults/failures
• Research and recommend machine control upgrades to address outdated controls
• Document changes to electrical drawings and generate upgraded drawings
• Prepare daily log reports and document/track the off-shift activity to ensure proper follow-up on machine problems and repairs
• Work on special projects such as machine function additions and troubleshooting, and repairing plant equipment
• Adding PLC relay outputs at the request of the customer
• Other projects and responsibilities as specified
• This is a hands-on position. Requires getting inside machines to inspect and/or replace parts, disassembling covers, etc.

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or related field

  • Minimum 3 years of experience troubleshooting electronic controls in a manufacturing setting

  • Knowledge of Fanuc and ABB robot electronic maintenance and programming
  • Knowledge of automated transfer systems like gantries

  • Knowledgeable in a variety of machine software
  • Ability to work independently as well as with a team
  • PLC experience, CNC troubleshooting experience, and AC/ DC servo drive experience
  • Basic algebraic mathematical ability
  • Understanding of standard to metric conversions
  • Excellent oral and written language ability
  • Ability to follow step-by-step procedures
