Job summary

Confidential is seeking a Controls Software and Hardware Design Engineer to develop control system hardware and software for the BWRX-300 project. The role emphasizes designing cabinets with 3D/2D CAD, configuring industrial control systems, and supporting validation, procurement, and commissioning.

You will collaborate with engineering, project management, procurement, and customer teams to deliver compliant, high-quality designs on schedule, while adhering to US and Canadian industry standards

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Network Engineering, or related field.
  • Minimum 4 years in controls cabinet design.
  • Minimum 2 years in controls software or HMI development.
  • Experience with industrial controls, automation systems, or power generation.
  • Ability to manage technical assignments to schedules.

Responsibilities

  • Create and modify controls cabinet drawings using 3D and 2D CAD software.
  • Design and develop control system code utilizing GEV Mark VIe/VIeS DCS, CIMPLICITY HMI, Siemens S7 PLC, and/or Bosch Rexroth motor controller platforms.
  • Support control system solutions for Safety Class 3 and non-safety systems within nuclear power plants.
  • Coordinate with Technical Project Engineers/Technical Leads, Project Engineers, Engineering Managers, and Project Managers regarding design inputs, project scope, engineering hours, schedules, and deliverables.
  • Review, incorporate, and implement project and customer requirements.
  • Prepare technical documentation, drawings, presentations, and other project deliverables.

Job description

The Controls Software and Hardware Design Engineer is responsible for developing and implementing control system hardware and software solutions for the BWRX-300 nuclear power project. The role focuses on three primary areas: designing controls cabinets using 3D and 2D CAD tools, developing and configuring industrial control systems and HMIs, and supporting the validation, documentation, procurement, and commissioning of control system solutions. This position works closely with engineering, project management, procurement, and customer teams to deliver compliant, high-quality control system designs on schedule.

Key Responsibilities
  • Create and modify controls cabinet drawings using 3D and 2D CAD software.
  • Design and develop control system code utilizing GEV Mark*VIe/VIeS DCS, CIMPLICITY HMI, Siemens S7 PLC, and/or Bosch Rexroth motor controller platforms.
  • Support control system solutions for Safety Class 3 and non-safety systems within nuclear power plants.
  • Participate in the design, development, validation, documentation, and commissioning of control system solutions.
  • Configure and support industrial control networks, including Cisco network switches, Fortinet firewalls, and routers.
  • Support VMware and virtual machine environments and thin-client configuration solutions using Windows and Linux.
  • Coordinate with Technical Project Engineers/Technical Leads, Project Engineers, Engineering Managers, and Project Managers regarding design inputs, project scope, engineering hours, schedules, and deliverables.
  • Review, incorporate, and implement project and customer requirements.
  • Ensure assigned work meets project milestones, customer deliverables, quality requirements, applicable regulations, and engineering standards.
  • Apply established engineering procedures to ensure compliance with quality assurance requirements.
  • Support Procurement Engineering teams with procurement package development and vendor documentation reviews.
  • Manage multiple projects, engineering activities, and priorities simultaneously.
  • Prepare technical documentation, drawings, presentations, and other project deliverables.
  • Support customer interactions and technical discussions as required.
  • Assist with system testing, validation, commissioning, and troubleshooting activities.
Minimum Education & Experience Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Network Engineering, or a related engineering discipline, or equivalent industry experience in the required technical areas.
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience in controls cabinet design.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in controls software, control code, or HMI development.
  • Experience working with industrial controls, automation systems, or power generation systems.
  • Experience with engineering design and construction practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage technical assignments and deliverables within established schedules.
Special Requirements
  • Experience with standards, regulations, and engineering requirements applicable to industrial control networks and control cabinet design in the United States and/or Canada.
  • Ability to work within applicable nuclear industry quality assurance and regulatory requirements.
  • Ability to support Safety Class 3 and non-safety control system applications.
  • Nuclear power industry experience is strongly preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Strong knowledge of industrial control systems and automation technologies.
  • Experience with GEV Mark*VIe or VIeS Controls Software Development.
  • Experience with CIMPLICITY HMI screen development.
  • Experience with Siemens S7 PLCs and/or Bosch Rexroth motor controllers.
  • Knowledge of controls cabinet design and electrical engineering practices.
  • Proficiency with Autodesk Inventor or other 3D cabinet modeling software.
  • Strong understanding of 2D CAD design and controls cabinet drawings.
  • Knowledge of industrial networking technologies, including Cisco switches, Fortinet firewalls, and routers.
  • Understanding of VMware and virtual machine concepts.
  • Experience with thin-client configuration using Windows and/or Linux.
  • Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, Visio, and PowerPoint.
  • Excellent written, verbal, graphical, and presentation skills.
  • Strong technical documentation skills.
  • Ability to interpret engineering specifications, drawings, standards, and customer requirements.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical abilities.

  • Experience supporting control system procurement and vendor documentation reviews.
  • Familiarity with nuclear industry engineering standards and practices.
  • Experience with system commissioning and field implementation.

  • Proven ability to take ownership of assignments and consistently meet project commitments.
  • Primarily an engineering and project-based work environment supporting nuclear power control system development.
  • Position may require collaboration with engineering, project management, procurement, vendors, customers, and field personnel.
  • Occasional travel may be required to support customer meetings, vendor activities, testing, commissioning, or project implementation.
  • Work may involve both office-based engineering activities and field or plant environments depending on project requirements.
  • Work schedules may vary based on project milestones, testing, commissioning, and customer requirements.
  • Remote or hybrid work arrangements may be available depending on project needs and company policy.
