Job summary

First Book is seeking a Controller for Accounting & Financial Operations in Washington, DC. This hybrid role leads day-to-day accounting, closes, and reporting, delivering accurate financial statements and board-level insights to support strategic decisions.

Reporting to the CFO, you will build budgets, forecasts, and models, strengthen internal controls, and drive automation. The role requires 10+ years in accounting/finance, CPA, and nonprofit experience; MBA/ MAcc preferred.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required.
• Active Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license in good standing required.
• Master’s degree in Business Administration (MBA) or Accounting (MAcc) preferred.

Responsibilities

• Lead all accounting operations and close processes in accordance with U.S. GAAP and nonprofit requirements.
• Provide forward-looking financial insights and support to leadership and Board-level reporting.
• Develop budgets, forecasts, and financial models; analyze variances and drive actionable insights.
• Oversee internal controls, cash management, and automated financial processes.
• Manage and develop the accounting team; partner with external auditors and tax advisors.
