Job summary

Our client in the energy industry, based in Virginia, MN, seeks a hands‑on Controller to lead all accounting and finance operations. With ~400 employees and $310M revenue, this role reports to the Owner and drives strategic financial leadership and performance across the organization.

You will manage day‑to‑day accounting, oversee audits, ensure GAAP compliance, and partner with executive leadership to guide growth initiatives and internal controls.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
  • CPA designation strongly preferred
  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive accounting experience
  • Minimum of 5 years of leadership experience managing an accounting or finance department
  • Demonstrated experience leading the full accounting function
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and internal controls
  • Experience overseeing financial audits and working with external auditors
  • Advanced proficiency with accounting software, ERP systems, and Microsoft Excel
  • Excellent leadership, communication, organizational, and decision‑making skills
  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining accuracy and confidentiality

Responsibilities

  • Lead all day‑to‑day accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, fixed assets, and financial reporting
  • Supervise, mentor, and develop the accounting team while fostering accountability and continuous improvement
  • Participate in the hiring, termination, and development of accounting, bookkeeping, and customer service teams
  • Oversee month‑end and year‑end close processes to ensure timely and accurate financial reporting
  • Prepare financial statements and reports for ownership
  • Provide financial analysis and recommendations to support strategic business decisions
  • Develop, implement, and maintain internal controls, accounting policies, and financial procedures
  • Oversee forecasting and cash flow management
  • Coordinate internal and external audits
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP and applicable federal, state, and local financial regulations
  • Oversee tax planning and compliance in partnership with external CPA firms and auditors
  • Monitor financial performance, identify trends, and recommend operational improvements
  • Evaluate and improve accounting systems, processes, and workflows
  • Support acquisitions, financing activities, and other strategic initiatives
  • Partner with department leaders throughout the organization to provide financial guidance
  • Present financial reports and key performance indicators directly to the Owner

Compensation: $120,000–$150,000, based on experience

Additional Compensation: Highly qualified candidates, including those with an active CPA license, may be eligible for higher compensation

What You’ll Do

What You Bring
