Job description

Overview

Community Water of America (“CWA”) provides regulated water and wastewater utility services with a focus on health, safety, and managing critical infrastructure that improves the lives of our customers and the communities we serve. Clean water and sanitation are an imperative for health, safety, and growth, but can no longer be taken for granted. Community water systems, in particular, are constrained in accessing capital and resources. With best-in-class industry leadership and operations, CWA aims to transform America’s water infrastructure in each community it touches.

Position Overview

Community Water of America is seeking an experienced and strategic Controller to lead the company’s accounting and financial reporting functions during a period of continued growth and infrastructure investment. This role is responsible for ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and compliance of financial reporting across a complex, multi-entity organization operating in a regulated utility environment.

Reporting directly to the VP of Finance, the Controller will serve as a key financial leader overseeing accounting operations, internal controls, audits, tax and regulatory compliance, and financial systems. The role requires a hands-on leader with the ability to design scalable processes, integrate acquisitions, and support operational and strategic decision-making while advancing CWA’s mission of delivering safe, reliable, and sustainable water and wastewater services to the communities it serves.

Responsibilities
  • Lead all corporate accounting and financial reporting functions for a growing, multi-entity organization, ensuring timely, accurate, and compliant financial statements in accordance with GAAP and applicable regulatory requirements
  • Prepare, review, and approve monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, including consolidated reporting, supporting schedules, journal entries, reconciliations, and variance analysis across multiple entities
  • Oversee all audit, tax, and regulatory compliance activities, serving as the primary point of contact for external auditors, tax advisors, and regulatory agencies
  • Develop and maintain strong controls over cash management, debt, equity, and intercompany transactions, ensuring accurate consolidated reporting across 10+ entities
  • Lead system implementations, accounting software conversions, and process improvements, including the integration of newly acquired companies, projects, and investments
  • Foster a culture of accountability, accuracy, collaboration, and continuous improvement within the accounting function
Requirements
  • Bachelor’s or advanced degree in accounting; CPA required
  • Experience in an accounting or controller function in or supporting an investor-owned utility, including working on acquisitions of other utilities preferred but not required
  • Regulatory accounting (NARUC) experience preferred but not required
  • 10 years of supervisory experience in multiple accounting functions using various accounting software
  • Experience managing financial transactions and consolidated reporting for 10+ entities or locations
  • Ability to maintain high degrees of accuracy, reliability, and manage multiple tasks with flexibility
  • Excellent time management, organization, critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • High degree of ethics, integrity, and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent verbal and written skills
  • Positive attitude with a professional and courteous demeanor
  • Ability to travel 2 – 4 times per year to attend company meetings lasting 2–3 days
