Position Overview
Community Water of America is seeking an experienced and strategic Controller to lead the company’s accounting and financial reporting functions during a period of continued growth and infrastructure investment. This role is responsible for ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and compliance of financial reporting across a complex, multi-entity organization operating in a regulated utility environment.
Reporting directly to the VP of Finance, the Controller will serve as a key financial leader overseeing accounting operations, internal controls, audits, tax and regulatory compliance, and financial systems. The role requires a hands-on leader with the ability to design scalable processes, integrate acquisitions, and support operational and strategic decision-making while advancing CWA’s mission of delivering safe, reliable, and sustainable water and wastewater services to the communities it serves.
Responsibilities
- Lead all corporate accounting and financial reporting functions for a growing, multi-entity organization, ensuring timely, accurate, and compliant financial statements in accordance with GAAP and applicable regulatory requirements
- Prepare, review, and approve monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, including consolidated reporting, supporting schedules, journal entries, reconciliations, and variance analysis across multiple entities
- Oversee all audit, tax, and regulatory compliance activities, serving as the primary point of contact for external auditors, tax advisors, and regulatory agencies
- Develop and maintain strong controls over cash management, debt, equity, and intercompany transactions, ensuring accurate consolidated reporting across 10+ entities
- Lead system implementations, accounting software conversions, and process improvements, including the integration of newly acquired companies, projects, and investments
- Foster a culture of accountability, accuracy, collaboration, and continuous improvement within the accounting function
Requirements
- Bachelor’s or advanced degree in accounting; CPA required
- Experience in an accounting or controller function in or supporting an investor-owned utility, including working on acquisitions of other utilities preferred but not required
- Regulatory accounting (NARUC) experience preferred but not required
- 10 years of supervisory experience in multiple accounting functions using various accounting software
- Experience managing financial transactions and consolidated reporting for 10+ entities or locations
- Ability to maintain high degrees of accuracy, reliability, and manage multiple tasks with flexibility
- Excellent time management, organization, critical thinking and problem-solving skills
- High degree of ethics, integrity, and interpersonal skills
- Excellent verbal and written skills
- Positive attitude with a professional and courteous demeanor
- Ability to travel 2 – 4 times per year to attend company meetings lasting 2–3 days
