Crew Finance is a fractional finance and accounting firm for high-growth startups in Consumer, Tech and SaaS. We serve some of the brightest emerging brands out there, the kind you've seen at a celebrity-hosted pop-up or spotted in a hotel minibar and thought, "who's behind that?" This role makes sure the numbers behind those brands are as good as what's on the shelf.
You own financial operations and reporting for a portfolio of early-stage consumer brands. These aren't clients with mature finance teams. They have big ambitions, lean infrastructure, and founders juggling seventeen things at once. Your job is to be the most reliable thing in their financial universe.
You know what COGS should look like for a premium snack, beauty or apparel brand. You've untangled a trade spend deduction before most people finish their morning coffee. And you'd rather talk about a DTC brand's inventory than dig into another SaaS ARR schedule. If that sounds like you, keep reading.
- You've done real accounting for brands that make physical things. Month-end close, inventory reconciliations, P&L reviews. You may have picked up a client's product at Whole Foods or Erewhon and felt a quiet sense of pride.
- You like the chaos-to-clarity journey. Founders are brilliant at building brands and usually not at financial infrastructure. That gap doesn't frustrate you. Fixing it is the part you enjoy.
- You're principled about accounting and pragmatic about implementation. You know when to enforce and when to sequence.
- You want variety, and you want to matter. A portfolio of fast-moving consumer brands, not one enterprise client with five layers of approvals. You know what your clients sell, and you care.
WHAT YOU'LL OWN
The Month-End Machine
- Own the full close: revenue, expenses, GL reconciliations, accruals and financial statements, on time, every month
- Manage a team of domestic and international accountants across your client portfolio
- Keep every client GAAP-compliant and on accrual-basis accounting, without making it everyone's problem
- Oversee billing, AP/AR, inventory costing and revenue recognition for each client
CPG Accounting (the real stuff)
- Manage inventory accounting: costing, write-offs and landed cost treatment, in partnership with each client
- Handle trade spend and promotional accounting: accruals, chargebacks, deduction management and retailer compliance
- Build and maintain COGS models that reflect how a product brand actually operates
- Support cash flow forecasting for inventory-heavy businesses, where timing is everything
Founder Support
- Translate the numbers for founders who are experts in their product, not their P&L
- Tell them what they need to hear, not just what they want to hear
Systems & Infrastructure
- Evaluate and implement the right tools for each client's stage: QBO, NetSuite, Xero, Bill.com and Shopify
- Build the processes that don't exist yet, and document them so they hold up when the business scales
- Put internal controls in place that add real protection without adding bureaucracy that kills momentum
YOUR FIRST 90 DAYS
- Days 1–30: Meet your manager and the accountants you'll work with. Learn your client portfolio: what each brand sells, where it sells, and where the books stand today. Learn Crew's close process, reporting standards and internal audit review.
- Days 31–60: Run the close for your clients with support. Get to know each founder and how they like to hear about their numbers. Map the inventory, COGS and trade spend gaps on each account.
- Days 61–90: Fully own the close and reporting for your portfolio. Deliver a short plan for each client on the processes, controls or systems they need next.
WHO YOU'LL WORK WITH
- Pod Lead: your manager, reviewer and partner on workload and client calls
- Accounting team: the domestic and international accountants you manage across your clients
- Founders & CEOs: the clients you report to and advise directly
- Quality Assurance: the team that reviews work and takes on specialized projects
- Client Experience: your partner when a client issue needs more than the pod
- Onboarding & scoping: the team that hands each new client to you
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
The CPG experience is non-negotiable. The startup instincts are what make you exceptional.
The foundation (non-negotiable)
- Deep CPG accounting experience. Inventory, COGS, trade spend, deductions and promotional accounting
- 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, ideally across multiple clients or companies
- Strong command of US GAAP, including revenue recognition and inventory valuation
- Systems fluency. QBO, NetSuite and Xero, plus the startup tool stack: Bill.com, Gusto and Shopify
- Bachelor's in Business or Accounting. A CPA is preferred and valued
What makes you right for this
- You've worked with early-stage founders. You know "we've been doing it this way" is both a red flag and completely understandable.
- You bring order without judgment. You clean up ambiguous situations without making people feel bad about the mess.
- You hold the line on what matters and let go of what doesn't, and you know the difference.
- You're curious about the brands you serve. What they sell, who their customer is, and why it matters.
- You run multiple clients without dropping anything, and you're honest when capacity is a constraint.
ESPECIALLY VALUABLE
- Experience at a fractional or outsourced accounting firm
- Retail and wholesale experience: chargebacks, deductions and retailer compliance
- Experience implementing NetSuite or moving a client off QuickBooks
WORKING AT CREW
Fractional work means exposure to dozens of consumer brands across stages, categories and business models. Your brain will not get bored. You'll work with a team of smart, collaborative people who care about doing right by clients and by each other.
- Clients you'll actually tell people about at dinner
- Room to grow as Crew grows, and the chance to build something real
- Remote-first, with a culture that trusts you to manage your time
- Strong benefits: a matched 401(k), health coverage paid 100% for you and 50% for your dependents, support for professional development, and a company-provided device
COMPENSATION & PROCESS
- Our process includes a recruiter screen, a short technical accounting assessment, and an interview with our leadership team
"Wait, that's one of our clients."
If you've said this in a grocery store aisle, this role is for you.
