Job summary

Crestwood Construction is seeking an experienced, hands-on Controller to lead the day-to-day accounting and financial operations of the company and its affiliated entities. This role will manage cash flow, AP/AR, job costing and billing, and coordinate year-end accounting and tax activities.

The ideal candidate combines strong accounting fundamentals with a hands-on approach, thrives in a project-based environment, and has experience in construction, contracting, real estate, or similar fields.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • Progressive accounting experience with general ledger, AP/AR, reconciliations, cash management, and financial reporting.
  • Experience managing month-end and year-end processes.
  • Strong understanding of accrual accounting and adjusting journal entries.
  • Experience coordinating with outside CPAs or tax professionals.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee day-to-day accounting operations and maintain accurate financial records.
  • Monitor cash flow, bank activity, and credit lines within set parameters.
  • Coordinate with Sage 100 Contractor for project-based accounting (job-costing, SOV, cost codes).
  • Prepare AJEs, reconciliations, and monthly financial reporting for ownership.
  • Support AP, AR, and billing processes; manage collections and cash flow.
  • Assist with year-end accounting, tax coordination, and audits.
  • Support multi-entity accounting across Crestwood Construction and affiliates.

Job description

Crestwood Construction is seeking an experienced, hands-on Controller to lead the day-to-day accounting and financial operations of the company and its affiliated entities. This position is responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, managing cash flow, overseeing accounts payable and receivable, supporting construction job costing and billing, and coordinating year-end accounting and tax activities.

The ideal candidate combines strong accounting fundamentals with a willingness to work directly in the details, moving between financial oversight and hands-on execution. Experience within construction, contracting, real estate, or another project-based environment is strongly preferred. Proficiency with Sage 100 Contractor or comparable construction accounting software is highly valued.

  • Oversee day-to-day accounting operations and maintain accurate, timely financial records.
  • Monitor bank and credit card activity, cash flow, and the company’s daily cash position.
  • Coordinate use of the company’s line of credit within established parameters.
  • Prepare and maintain general ledger activity, financial reports, and supporting schedules.
  • Prepare and post adjusting journal entries (AJEs) and perform monthly account reconciliations.
  • Prepare monthly financial and operational reporting for ownership and leadership.
  • Maintain appropriate accounting controls and identify opportunities to strengthen financial processes.
  • Respond to financial analyses, reporting requests, and special accounting projects as needed.
Construction & Job-Cost Accounting
  • Maintain construction job setup, job numbers, cost codes, Schedules of Values (SOV), and related accounting information within Sage 100 Contractor.
  • Maintain the company’s master SOV and cost-code structure.
  • Review job-level income, expenses, overhead, warranty costs, and other financial activity for accuracy.
  • Prepare and maintain Jobs in Progress (WIP) and Jobs Completed schedules.
  • Maintain job-level financial information for internal reporting and ownership review.
  • Audit insurance and other costs allocated to individual projects.
  • Support project teams with accounting, billing, cost-code, and job-cost questions.
  • Assist with lien documentation, Notices of Completion, and related requirements as needed.
Accounts Receivable & Billing
  • Oversee accounts receivable processes and maintain accurate customer and project records.
  • Establish new client jobs within Sage 100 Contractor using established naming and coding conventions.
  • Review and process progress billings, maintenance invoices, and service invoices.
  • Record customer payments, deposits, checks, wires, and other receipts.
  • Maintain accurate deposit and banking documentation.
  • Communicate with clients regarding billing and payments as appropriate.
  • Monitor receivables and support timely collections and cash-flow management.
Accounts Payable
  • Manage the weekly accounts payable process, including invoice review and payment selection.
  • Review AP aging, vendor balances, job allocations, due dates, and payment priorities.
  • Verify subcontractor and vendor Certificates of Insurance prior to payment.
  • Process vendor payments through Sage 100 Contractor and maintain supporting documentation.
  • Prepare and distribute checks and other vendor payments.
  • Coordinate conditional and unconditional lien-release documentation.
  • Review supplier statements, reconcile vendor accounts, and calculate applicable discounts.
  • Review and approve invoices within the company’s invoice-processing system.
Cash, Banking & Credit Card Management
  • Monitor company bank accounts and credit card activity.
  • Manage credit card users, spending limits, payments, transaction review, and rewards programs.
  • Record credit card payments and activity in Sage 100 Contractor.
  • Coordinate wire transfers, mobile deposits, and other banking activity.
  • Maintain banking relationships and support line-of-credit administration.
  • Monitor company credit reporting and address discrepancies as needed.
Multi-Entity Accounting
  • Provide accounting support for Crestwood Construction and affiliated business and real estate entities.
  • Maintain general ledger activity and financial records across related entities.
  • Prepare AJEs, reconciliations, and periodic reporting for affiliated companies.
  • Maintain appropriate allocation of expenses, income, and intercompany activity.
  • Support ownership with financial reporting across the broader portfolio.
Tax, CPA & Year-End Coordination
  • Serve as a primary accounting liaison with outside CPAs and financial advisors.
  • Prepare schedules and documentation for year-end accounting and tax preparation.
  • Prepare annual WIP, Jobs Completed, accrued payroll, and other year-end schedules.
  • Support financial statement reviews and audits.
  • Participate in tax planning and coordinate quarterly estimated tax payments.
  • Prepare monthly and year-end AJEs.
  • Prepare, file, and remit applicable California and Nevada sales tax reports and payments.
  • Respond to CPA requests and ensure financial documentation is accurate and timely.
Insurance & Compliance Support
  • Coordinate accounting requirements for general liability and workers’ compensation insurance.
  • Prepare insurance renewal estimates and required financial documentation.
  • Maintain company Certificates of Insurance.
  • Review vendor and subcontractor insurance documentation as part of AP.
  • Review insurance charges allocated to construction projects.
  • Assist with financial documentation related to contracts, liens, and Notices of Completion.
Systems & Process Management
  • Serve as a primary internal resource for Sage 100 Contractor and related accounting processes.
  • Troubleshoot Sage 100 Contractor and associated systems for employees.
  • Coordinate with outside Sage consultants and manage software updates and system support.
  • Support accounting workflows within subcontractor and invoice-processing systems.
  • Identify opportunities to improve processes, controls, reporting, and system utilization.
Operational & Leadership Support
  • Partner with leadership on financial, accounting, and operational matters.
  • Provide timely financial information to support business decisions.
  • Assist employees and project teams with accounting and system-related questions.
  • Coordinate with accountants, banks, insurance professionals, legal counsel, and technology providers.
  • Review owner contracts and coordinate financial or contractual matters with legal counsel as needed.
  • Support financial analysis, reporting, and special projects.
  • Perform other accounting and financial responsibilities consistent with the needs of a growing construction organization.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field, or equivalent education and professional experience.
  • Progressive accounting experience encompassing general ledger, AP, AR, reconciliations, cash management, and financial reporting.
  • Experience managing month-end and year-end accounting processes.
  • Strong understanding of accrual accounting and adjusting journal entries.
  • Experience preparing financial schedules and supporting outside CPA or tax professionals.
  • Ability to manage multiple bank accounts, entities, projects, and competing financial priorities.
  • Strong Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets skills.
  • High degree of accuracy, organization, discretion, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and collaborate effectively with leadership and operational teams.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Accounting or Controller experience within construction, general contracting, real estate development, or another project-based business.
  • Hands-on experience with Sage 100 Contractor.
  • Knowledge of construction accounting, including job costing, progress billing, WIP reporting, SOVs, cost codes, and project-level reporting.
  • Experience managing accounting for multiple related entities.
  • Familiarity with subcontractor Certificates of Insurance, lien releases, Notices of Completion, and construction financial documentation.
  • Experience working with owners, executives, CPAs, banks, insurance brokers, and legal counsel.
  • CPA, CMA, or other relevant professional certification valued but not required.
