Job summary

Texas Public Radio in San Antonio seeks a strategic, detail-oriented Controller to lead accounting and financial operations, ensuring accuracy, compliance and sound stewardship. The role oversees reporting, budgeting, audits, internal controls and regulatory compliance, partnering with leadership and the Board.

You will manage month-end close, assist with grants budgeting, supervise staff, coordinate audits, and provide financial guidance to departments.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration.
  • 5+ years in progressive accounting and financial management with Controller-level experience.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting and internal controls.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgement for sensitive information.
  • Strong communication skills for executive leadership and non-financial stakeholders.
  • Proficiency with accounting software and Microsoft Excel.

Responsibilities

  • Oversees and manages the organization’s accounting operations including month-end close and close processes.
  • Prepares consolidated financial statements, budget reports, forecasts and analyses.
  • Interprets GAAP, financial policies and regulatory requirements.
  • Supervises accounting staff and Accounts Payable for accuracy and efficiency.
  • Coordinates annual audits, liaises with external auditors and supports audit schedules.
  • Partners with HR on employee benefits and payroll deductions reconciliations.
  • Manages insurance renewals and related coverage needs.
  • Maintains fixed assets, depreciation, and lease accounting schedules.
  • Ensures compliance with financial reporting requirements including IRS Form 1099.
  • Provides financial guidance to department leaders for planning and resource allocation.
  • Maintains confidentiality and professional judgment in handling sensitive information.
  • Identifies opportunities to improve processes and internal controls.
  • Performs other finance and administrative leadership duties as needed.
  • Participates in fundraising, sponsorship activities and live events.

Texas Public Radio (TPR) is seeking a strategic, collaborative and detail-oriented Controller to lead the organization’s accounting and financial operations while ensuring accuracy, compliance and sound financial stewardship.

Based in San Antonio, this leader will oversee accounting operations, financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, audits, internal controls and compliance. You'll partner with executive leadership and the Board of Directors to provide financial insight, guide resource allocation and strengthen processes that support organizational goals.

Whether you're leading financial reporting and audits, managing budgets and forecasts, supporting department leaders, or improving financial processes and controls, your work will help ensure the organization’s financial health and long-term success.

What You'll Do
  • Oversees and manages the organization’s accounting operations, including recording cash receipts, general ledger activity, financial reporting, reconciliations, and monthend/year-end close processes.
  • Prepares, analyzes and presents consolidated financial statements, budget reports, forecasts and financial analyses to executive leadership.
  • Exercises independent judgment in interpreting and applying Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), financial policies and regulatory requirements.
  • Supervises and reviews the work of accounting support staff, including Accounts Payable functions, to ensure accuracy, compliance and operational efficiency.
  • Coordinates annual financial audits, prepares audit schedules and supporting documentation and serves as the primary liaison with external auditors.
  • Partners with HR Manager on employee benefit administration as needed and produces billing reconciliations compared to employee deductions.
  • Manages organizational insurance renewals and evaluates coverage needs related to liability, workers’ compensation, directors and officers (D&O), and related policies.
  • Maintains fixed asset records, depreciation schedules and lease accounting schedules in accordance with accounting standards.
  • Ensures compliance with federal, state and local financial reporting requirements, including preparation and review of IRS Form 1099 reporting.
  • Provides financial guidance and support to department leaders to assist with operational planning, grant budgeting and resource allocation.
  • Maintains confidentiality of sensitive financial, payroll and employee benefit information while demonstrating professionalism and sound business judgment.
  • Identifies opportunities to improve financial processes, internal controls and operational efficiencies across the organization.
  • Performs other finance and administrative leadership duties as assigned in support of organizational goals and objectives.
  • Participates appropriately in TPR fundraising, sponsorship activities and live events.

What We're Looking For
Required Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications
