Job summary

NOW CFO is partnering with an established Utah construction company to find its next Controller. You’ll ensure accurate, timely numbers from project setup through month-end close and work closely with ownership, the CFO, and project teams to strengthen job costing, billing, and leadership-facing reporting.

The ideal candidate has hands-on controller experience in construction, strong GAAP knowledge, and expertise in WIP, retainage, and progress billing.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field.
• Controller experience in the construction industry.
• Strong GAAP knowledge and job costing.
• Experience with WIP schedules and progress billings.
• Experience with construction accounting software (e.g., Sage 300 CRE, Sage Intacct Construction, Viewpoint Vista, Foundation, or QuickBooks Contractor).
• CPA preferred; internal auditing experience.
• Excellent communication and ability to work with project managers and field teams.

Responsibilities

• Manage the month-end close and prepare accurate, timely financial statements.
• Set up and maintain job cost structures, cost codes, and budgets for each project.
• Prepare WIP schedules and over/under billing reports.
• Oversee progress billing (including AIA G702/G703), retainage tracking, and change order documentation.
• Manage accounts payable and receivable, including lien waivers and subcontractor compliance.
• Oversee payroll, including certified payroll, prevailing wage, and union reporting where applicable.
• Implement and strengthen internal controls and accounting procedures.
• Support revenue recognition under ASC 606 and percentage-of-completion accounting.
• Prepare financial packages for lenders, sureties, and CPAs, and support audits and year-end reporting.
• Provide job profitability analysis and cash flow reporting to leadership.
• Supervise, train, and develop accounting staff.

As Controller, you'll make sure leadership has accurate, timely numbers on every job, from project setup through month-end close. You'll work closely with ownership, the CFO, and project teams to keep the books clean, strengthen job costing and billing, and deliver reporting that leadership can manage with confidence.

We value candidates who have hands-on controller experience in the construction industry and hold relevant certifications. The ideal candidate excels at high-level and managerial accounting. You should also be skilled at job costing, WIP schedules, and progress billing. You understand the details that make construction accounting different, such as retainage, change orders, lien waivers, and certified payroll. You know how to build processes that keep those details from slipping through the cracks. Ultimately, you'll make sure the company stays compliant, gets paid on time, and has a clear view of how each job is performing.

Requirements:

• Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field
• Controller experience in the construction industry
• Strong knowledge of GAAP, job costing, and construction revenue recognition
• Experience preparing WIP schedules and progress billings
• Experience with construction accounting software (e.g., Sage 300 CRE, Sage Intacct Construction, Viewpoint Vista, Foundation, or QuickBooks Contractor)
• Experience with certified payroll or prevailing wage reporting (preferred)
• Internal auditing experience
• CPA (preferred)
• Excellent communication skills and the ability to work closely with project managers and field teams
• Strong attention to detail and the ability to meet close deadlines
