Job summary

Bustle Digital Group seeks an experienced Controller to join our Finance team in New York. This role ensures accounting integrity through process knowledge, technical expertise, and reporting leadership, with a hands-on approach and a focus on improving controls.

Responsibilities include leading month-end close, cash forecasting, coordinating with FP&A and executives, leading audits, and mentoring the accounting team to excel.

Qualifications

  • CPA with a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or similar.
  • 10-15 years’ experience across public accounting and private industry.
  • Strong technical accounting skills including revenue recognition and stock-based compensation.
  • Excellent communication and leadership abilities.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the month-end close process and prepare financial statements.
  • Manage day-to-day cash flow, forecasting, and liquidity management.
  • Partner with FP&A, Ad Revenue Operations, CFO, and CEO for reporting and strategic insights.
  • Lead the annual financial audit and provide support for audited statements.
  • Review reconciliations, journal entries, and variance analyses; document controls.
  • Manage the Accounting Team with mentorship and growth support.
  • Prepare financial decks for Board meetings and key reviews.
  • Oversee tax compliance and reporting, including state filings.
  • Identify and implement process improvements within the department.

Job description

Bustle Digital Group is seeking an experienced Controller to join our growing Finance team! This position is responsible for ensuring the integrity of Bustle Digital Group accounting by providing process knowledge, technical expertise, and reporting leadership with a strong desire to improve processes and controls.

The candidate must be a leader, have experience in managing teams, be detail oriented, have strong organization and communication skills, and be hands‑on. The position requires management capabilities to communicate with and educate finance and non-finance personnel on financial policies and business opportunities. Our ideal candidate is a well‑rounded performer who thrives in a fast‑paced environment, is focused on process improvement, and has the passion to excel.

Responsibilities
  • Oversee the month‑end close process, preparing financial statements, and handling advanced reconciliations, while working with the business stakeholders and the accounting team to reduce the number of days to close
  • Manage day‑to‑day cash flow, including forecasting, monitoring bank balances, and ensuring adequate liquidity to meet operational needs and obligations.
  • Partner closely with FP&A, Ad Revenue Operations, the CFO, and CEO to align financial reporting, forecasting, and business decisions, providing timely insights to support strategic planning.
  • Lead the annual financial audit and preparation of support for audited financial statements
  • Review account reconciliations and journal entries; prepare variance analyses and ensure accounting activities are well supported and documented
  • Manage Accounting Team; provide mentorship and guidance while helping them to excel and grow in their roles
  • Prepare financial deck for quarterly and ad hoc Board of Director meetings
  • Oversee tax compliance and reporting, including state tax filings
  • Solve complex problems and contribute to improving processes within the department and company
Requirements
  • CPA with a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or similar
  • 10-15 years’ experience, with a blend of public accounting firm and private industry experience
  • Strong and proven technical accounting skills, specifically revenue recognition, complex transactions, stock‑based compensation
  • Strong Accounting systems and Excel skills
  • Detail oriented and organized team player with an ability to take a new perspective using existing solutions
  • Proactive attitude to bring up any issues and assist team with coming up with solutions
  • Critical thinker who can seek innovative solutions to complex business/technical issues
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, able to clearly and concisely interface with all levels of executive leadership

$210,000 - $220,000 a year
