The Controller will oversee all accounting and financial operations for a privately held & growing residential property management company in Northern New Jersey. This is a fully on‑site, hands‑on role in a very fast‑paced environment, suited for a high‑energy, self‑starter who is proactive, detail‑oriented, and comfortable working closely with ownership to support growth and operational excellence.
Job Responsibilities
- Manage all day‑to‑day accounting operations across multiple properties and entities, including GL, AP/AR, payroll, and cash management
- Lead monthly, quarterly, and year‑end close processes and prepare accurate financial statements, rent rolls, DSCR reporting, and variance analyses
- Serve as the primary contact for banking relationships, including HUD loans and ongoing lender reporting and compliance
- Oversee budgeting, forecasting, and financial projections for existing properties and new projects
- Support business growth through financial insight related to capital raising, grants, affordable housing funding, and industry best practices
- Maintain and optimize Yardi as the core accounting and property management system
- Coordinate annual reporting and audits and support tax‑related work with the external accounting firm
- Oversee ADP payroll processing and the AIA billing process
- Drive process improvement through automation, AI tools, and scalable accounting practices
- Lead and develop the accounting team in a high‑volume, deadline‑driven environment
- This is a fully on‑site role with no hybrid option and requires working two Saturdays per month
Job Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance; CPA preferred
- 6+ years of progressive accounting experience, ideally within the residential property or construction field
- Deep understanding of multi‑entity accounting, rent rolls, DSCR, and lender reporting
- Direct experience working with banks and HUD financing
- Strong budgeting, forecasting, and financial modeling experience
- Hands‑on experience with Yardi is required
- Knowledge of real estate tax concepts and experience supporting tax filings with external firms
- Experience overseeing ADP payroll and AIA billing
- High‑energy, self‑motivated professional who thrives in a very fast‑paced environment

- Spanish or Portuguese language skills are a significant plus
- Interest in leveraging automation, AI, and technology to improve financial processes
