Job summary

RPM Utilities seeks an experienced Controller to lead day-to-day accounting and financial operations for a growing construction organization. The role partners with executives to ensure accurate reporting, strong internal controls, and timely financial information for decision making.

The ideal candidate is hands-on with project-based accounting, job costing, WIP reporting, and close processes. Strong Excel and ERP experience are required to manage payroll, AR/AP, and GL activities.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field.
• 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, including leadership roles such as Controller or Accounting Manager.
• Strong background in construction, utilities, excavation, or project-based accounting.

Responsibilities

RPM Utilities is seeking an experienced Controller to lead the day-to-day accounting and financial operations of our growing construction organization. This position will work closely with executive leadership and operations to ensure accurate financial reporting, strong internal controls, effective cash management, and timely financial information to support business decisions.

The ideal candidate is a hands‑on accounting leader with experience in construction, utilities, excavation, or another project‑based environment and a strong understanding of job costing and work‑in‑progress reporting.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage and oversee all daily accounting and financial operations.
• Prepare timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
• Manage the month‑end and year‑end closing processes.
• Oversee job costing, WIP reporting, project financial performance, and cost‑to‑complete analysis.
• Review project costs, budgets, margins, change orders, and financial variances.
• Partner with project management and operations teams to identify financial risks and opportunities.
• Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, billing, collections, and general ledger activity.
• Monitor company cash flow and prepare cash flow forecasts.
• Manage bank reconciliations, balance sheet reconciliations, and general ledger accuracy.
• Maintain and strengthen accounting procedures, internal controls, and financial processes.
• Oversee payroll accounting and ensure payroll‑related expenses and liabilities are properly recorded and reconciled.
• Prepare financial reports, forecasts, budgets, and management reporting for company leadership.
• Manage fixed assets, equipment accounting, depreciation, and related reconciliations.
• Coordinate with outside CPAs, auditors, insurance providers, banks, and other financial partners as needed.
• Assist with tax reporting, annual audits, workers' compensation audits, and other compliance requirements.
• Ensure compliance with company policies and applicable federal, state, and local financial requirements.
• Identify opportunities to streamline accounting processes, improve reporting, and increase efficiency.
• Support accounting and financial operations across affiliated companies as needed.
• Lead, train, and support accounting team members while maintaining accountability for deadlines and accuracy.
• Perform additional financial and accounting duties as assigned by executive leadership.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field preferred.
• 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, including experience in a Controller, Assistant Controller, Accounting Manager, or similar leadership role.
• Construction, underground utility, excavation, heavy civil, materials, or other project‑based accounting experience strongly preferred.
• Strong knowledge of job costing, WIP schedules, percentage‑of‑completion concepts, and construction financial reporting.
• Experience managing month‑end close, financial statements, reconciliations, budgeting, and cash flow.
• Strong understanding of GAAP and accounting principles.
• Experience overseeing accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll accounting, and general ledger functions.
• Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
• Experience with accounting, ERP, payroll, or construction management systems.
• Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills with exceptional attention to detail.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast‑paced environment.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with accounting, operations, project management, and executive leadership.
• Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality and professionalism.
