Job summary

Pawnee Mental Health is seeking a qualified Controller to lead accounting, closes, and financial reporting. You will oversee GAAP compliance, reconciliations, and cost reporting while partnering with the CFO and leadership to strengthen internal controls.

The role requires strong analytical skills, a track record in audits, and experience with ERP systems. Healthcare exposure is a plus; select benefits are included in the package.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required with progressive accounting experience.
  • CPA strongly preferred; healthcare setting experience a plus.
  • Experience with general ledger, financial statements, and audits.

Responsibilities

  • Manage agency accounting and accounts payable per GAAP.
  • Lead monthly and year-end close processes and calendar.
  • Ensure general ledger integrity and proper chart of accounts.
  • Oversee monthly balance sheet reconciliations and discrepancies.
  • Prepare timely monthly/annual financial statements and analyses.
  • Develop and monitor accounting policies and internal controls.
  • Coordinate annual financial audit and support external auditors.
  • Prepare cost reports and schedules under CFO supervision.
  • Oversee fixed asset and lease accounting; depreciation and disposals.
  • Collaborate on budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning.

The Role You Play
  • 1. Manage the agency accounting and accounts payable functions and ensure work is completed accurately, timely, and in accordance with established policies, internal controls, and generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
  • 2. Lead the monthly and year-end financial close processes, including development and management of the close calendar, review of journal entries, and timely resolution of outstanding accounting matters.
  • 3. Ensure the integrity of the general ledger, including appropriate account classification, accurate recording of financial transactions, and maintenance of the chart of accounts and related accounting structures.
  • 4. Oversee completion and review of monthly balance sheet reconciliations, including cash, receivables, payables, accrued liabilities, fixed assets, and other material accounts, and ensure discrepancies are researched and resolved timely.
  • 5. Lead the preparation of accurate and timely monthly and annual financial statements, supporting schedules, and financial analysis for review by the CFO and presentation to the Board of Directors and Foundation Board of Directors.
  • 6. Prepare and maintain regular financial reports, analyze results and trends, identify material variances or concerns, and provide recommendations to the CFO.
  • 7. Develop, maintain, monitor, and strengthen accounting policies, internal controls, segregation of duties, and financial procedures to safeguard agency assets and support reliable financial reporting.
  • 8. Lead accounting preparation for the annual financial audit, serve as the primary accounting contact for external auditors, coordinate requested schedules and documentation, and ensure audit findings or corrective actions are addressed timely.
  • 9. Lead the preparation, reconciliation, documentation, and review of required cost reports and supporting financial schedules, including CCBHC cost reporting, under the direction and final review of the CFO.
  • 10. Oversee fixed asset accounting, including capitalization, depreciation, disposals, construction-in-progress activity, and related reconciliations, and oversee lease accounting and other applicable accounting standards.
  • 11. Oversee cash and bank accounting activities, including bank reconciliations and related internal controls, and serve as a point of contact for Pawnee's banking relationships as assigned by the CFO.
  • 12. Assist the CFO with cash flow analysis, financial modeling, cost analysis, forecasting, and other strategic financial analysis as requested.
  • 13. Collaborate with the CFO, Revenue Cycle Manager, and other agency leaders to analyze revenue performance, accounts receivable, reimbursement trends, productivity, and other financial performance indicators while maintaining independent accounting oversight of revenue and receivable balances.
  • 14. Ensure revenue, accounts receivable, cash receipts, contractual allowances, write-offs, and other revenue-cycle-related financial activity are appropriately reconciled to the general ledger, and investigate material discrepancies in collaboration with Revenue Cycle leadership.
  • 15. Collaborate with the CFO and Budget & Contract Manager in the annual budgeting and forecasting process by providing historical financial data, accounting guidance, financial projections, and actual-to-budget analysis.
  • 16. Oversee the integrity and effective use of accounting systems, workflows, financial reporting structures, and related processes; identify and implement opportunities to improve accuracy, efficiency, and internal controls.
  • 17. Hire, supervise, develop, and evaluate qualified accounting and accounts payable staff; establish performance expectations, ensure appropriate training and cross-training, provide feedback, document concerns, and take corrective action when necessary.
  • 18. Serve as a member of Pawnee's Leadership Team and attend quarterly meetings.
  • 19. Develop, review, and revise policies and procedures related to areas of responsibility as assigned by the CFO, and provide financial guidance to committees and work groups as assigned.
  • 20. Work cooperatively with agency leadership and staff to support the efficient and effective provision of services while maintaining appropriate financial controls and stewardship of agency resources.
  • 21. Maintain and advance knowledge and skills related to the position and field of work through regular review of pertinent materials and participation in training events as approved by supervisor.
  • 22. Adhere to the standards, policies, and instructions established by Pawnee Policy and Procedure and any applicable ethical codes within the field of employment.
  • 23. Review and comply with the Pawnee Code of Conduct outlined in the Employee Handbook.
Requirements
Required:
  • - Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or a related field.
  • - Five or more years of progressively responsible professional accounting experience.
  • - Demonstrated experience with general ledger accounting, financial statement preparation, account reconciliations, month-end and year-end close processes, and external audit support.
  • - Strong analytical, problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills, including the ability to identify accounting errors, research discrepancies, implement corrective action, and strengthen internal controls.
  • - Demonstrated knowledge of GAAP and internal control principles.
  • - Proficiency with accounting and financial reporting systems and advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
Preferred:
  • - CPA strongly preferred.
  • - Master's degree in finance, accounting, business administration, or a related field.
  • - Ten or more years of professional accounting experience.
  • - Experience in a healthcare setting, behavioral/mental health strongly preferred.
  • - Experience with Sage Intacct or other enterprise accounting systems.
  • - Prior supervisory or accounting leadership experience strongly preferred.
