Universe Living is seeking a Controller to manage day-to-day accounting in the Los Angeles area. The role requires 5 years of multi-family property accounting and strong Yardi Voyager experience, with leadership of an accounting team.

The Controller will oversee all accounting functions, prepare and present financial statements, and coordinate annual audits and tax filings. This is a growth-minded role within a real estate portfolio company.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises monthly balancing of books and reviews; presents monthly statements.
  • Coordinates annual audit and tax document preparation.
  • Provides management with timely financial status updates.
  • Ensures payroll and property tax reporting compliance.
  • Monitors receivables to mitigate credit risk.
  • Oversees accounts payable, expense reporting, and PO procedures.
  • Assists with company strategic planning.
  • Supports special projects as required.

Job description

Universe Living is looking for a Controller to manage our day-to-day accounting. This position has the ability to grow as we expand our portfolio and business lines. Real Estate Multi-family Property Management and Yardi experience is mandatory. We will only consider candidates based in the Los Angeles area.

Primary duties and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
  • Manages all accounting functions
  • Reviews, evaluates and implements accounting systems, policies, and procedures.
  • Ensures all financial reports are prepared in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Prepares and presents financial statements and related reports including but not limited to balance sheets, income statements, cash-flow reports, budgets, and variance analysis.
  • Supervises monthly balancing of books and monthly account reviews; prepares and presents monthly financial statements.
  • Coordinates annual independent audit and preparation of annual tax documents.
  • Provides management with timely reviews of organization's financial status and progress.
  • Ensures compliance with statutory payroll and property tax reporting.
  • Monitors receivables to ensure credit risk is mitigated.
  • Oversees accounts payable function including but not limited to compliance with expense reporting, capitalization policy, and purchase order procedures.
  • Assists with company strategic planning.
  • Assistswith special projects as required.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by management.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Directly supervises 4-5 employees within the Accounting department.
  • Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.
  • Responsibilities include interviewing, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
Minimum requirements:
  • 5 years experience in multi-family property accounting
  • 5 years experience with Yardi Voyager or comparable software
  • 5 years experience managing an accounting team of 4 or more
  • Education in accounting is highly preferred
  • Advanced MS Office Skills
