Job summary

Search Services in Katy, TX, seeks an experienced Controller to lead all accounting and financial reporting for a commercial construction and real estate development business. This hands-on role emphasizes job costing, consolidation, and GAAP compliance.

You will mentor the accounting team, manage audits and lender reporting, and partner with executives to drive planning, forecasting, and strategic decision-making.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required.
• 7+ years of progressive accounting experience.
• At least 4 years in a Controller or Senior Accounting Manager role.
• Significant commercial construction accounting experience required.
• Deep knowledge of construction accounting principles including percentage-of-completion, job costing, change orders, and retainage.
• Experience with multi-entity structures and joint ventures.
• Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
• Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to collaborate across Construction, Development, Asset Management and Executives.
• High integrity and attention to detail.
• Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.

Responsibilities

• Oversee monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, including consolidated reports for multiple entities and joint ventures.
• Manage project accounting: job costing, %‑of‑completion revenue, WIP schedules, and project profitability.
• Ensure GAAP, tax regulations, and industry standards compliance for real estate development and construction.
• Lead budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning at project and company levels.
• Oversee accounts payable/receivable, cash management and banking relationships.
• Manage the general ledger, month-end and year-end closes and reconciliations.
• Coordinate external audits, tax filings, and lender reporting requirements.
• Develop and maintain internal controls and policies for construction and development.
• Provide financial analysis and reporting to CFO/CEO/project executives, including variance and cash flow.
• Supervise and mentor Staff Accountants, Senior Accountants, and Accounting Manager.
• Support due diligence for new projects, JVs and financing transactions.
• Implement and optimize accounting systems, including Foundation.

ABOUT THE ROLE

Our Client is seeking an experienced and strategic Controller to join its leadership team. This hands‑on role will oversee all aspects of accounting and financial reporting, with a strong emphasis on commercial construction and real estate development accounting. The ideal candidate brings deep technical accounting expertise, strong attention to detail, and the ability to translate complex financial information into clear, actionable insights for executive leadership. This position is well suited for an accomplished accounting leader who can balance strategic financial oversight with hands‑on execution in a fast‑paced, deadline-driven environment.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Oversee the preparation and accuracy of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, including consolidated reporting for multiple entities and joint ventures
• Manage all aspects of project accounting, including job cost reporting, percentage-of-completion revenue recognition, WIP schedules, and project profitability analysis
• Ensure compliance with GAAP, tax regulations, and industry-specific accounting standards applicable to real estate development and construction
• Lead budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning processes, including project-level and company-wide budgets
• Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, cash management, and banking relationships
• Manage the general ledger, month-end and year-end close processes, and financial reconciliations
• Coordinate and manage external audits, tax filings, and lender reporting requirements
• Develop and maintain strong internal controls and accounting policies tailored to the construction and development industry
• Provide financial analysis and reporting to the CFO, CEO, and project executives, including variance analysis, cash flow forecasting, and key performance metrics
• Supervise, develop, and mentor the accounting team, including Staff Accountants, Senior Accountants, and the Accounting Manager
• Support due diligence efforts related to new project acquisitions, joint ventures, and financing transactions
• Implement and optimize accounting systems and processes, including construction‑specific software such as Foundation QUALIFICATIONS
