Hope City Church is seeking a Controller to lead accounting operations and partner with the CFO on financial strategy. The role ensures integrity, timeliness, and quality of reporting, budgeting, and internal controls while guiding a skilled accounting team.

The ideal candidate has a Bachelor’s in Accounting/Finance, 5+ years in financial management, nonprofit experience, and strong Excel/Sage Intacct skills. CPA a plus; flexible to support church events as needed.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance is required.
  • 5+ years of financial management; 8+ years accounting preferred.
  • Nonprofit accounting experience preferred; CPA a plus.
  • Proven experience leading and developing an accounting team.
  • Advanced Excel and Sage Intacct experience preferred; AI tools encouraged.

  • Review and approve AP, journal entries, and cash disbursements.

Controller
Purpose of the Job:

Hope City Church is seeking a Controller to lead accounting operations and serve as a key financial partner to the CFO. This position is responsible for the integrity and timeliness of the organization's accounting, financial reporting, budgeting, cash reporting, internal controls, and financial close processes. The Controller will lead the accounting team and establish accountability for accurate and timely execution while personally preparing key financial deliverables for CFO review.

Experience and Knowledge Required:
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.
  • 5+ years of financial management experience; 8+ years of progressive accounting experience preferred.
  • Nonprofit accounting experience preferred; CPA a plus.
  • Proven experience leading and developing an accounting team.
  • Advanced Excel and strong financial systems skills; Sage Intacct experience preferred.
  • Proficiency using AI and technology to improve accounting, reporting, and efficiency while ensuring accuracy and confidentiality.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
  • Lead the accounting team, fostering a culture of excellence, accountability, and care.
  • Provide oversight and review of offering processing, giving records, reconciliations, and weekly offering reporting.
  • Review and approve weekly purchase requests, AP bills, check runs, and journal entries.
  • Manage Sage Expense Management processes, including timely submission and reconciliation of expense and credit card activity.
  • Evaluate and improve inventory processes, ensuring accurate and reconciled balances.
  • Oversee the month-end close, ensuring all bank and balance sheet accounts are reconciled, supported, and discrepancies are resolved timely.
  • Prepare monthly financial reporting and analysis for CFO review and approval, including budget-to-actual results, variance analysis, and cash flow.
  • Prepare quarterly financial statements, Pushpay giving statements, and required bank reports.
  • Maintain and continuously improve accounting policies, procedures, internal controls, and business processes.
  • Partner with and support the CFO in the annual budget process, including operating and capital budgets.
  • Monitor monthly budget-to-actual performance and partner with teams to manage spending.
  • Lead annual audit preparation and coordination for Hope City and related organizations.
  • Ensure annual 1099 reporting is completed accurately and timely.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Maintain a standard Monday-Friday work schedule, with flexibility to support church events during evenings, weekends, or holidays as needed.
