Job summary

Southern States Cooperative seeks an experienced Controller to lead the financial functions and build an accounting department with strong internal controls.

You will oversee month-end close, deliver monthly financials, and present to the board in a digestible format. The role also includes managing the balance sheet, coordinating audits, budgeting, forecasting, payroll collaboration with HR, and driving cost-saving initiatives.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business or related field is required.
• 5-10 years in an accounting leadership role.
• Cooperative or agriculture experience preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

• Lead the accounting function with strong internal controls and checks and balances.
• Oversee month-end close and produce monthly financials.
• Present annual financials at board meetings in a digestible format.
• Manage the balance sheet and alert leadership to potential issues.
• Coordinate external audits with the CPA and manage taxes.
• Oversee budgeting, forecasting, and cost control initiatives.
• Create reporting dashboards for department leaders and communicate financial impact.
• Collaborate with HR to manage payroll and ensure timely checks.

Job description

The Controller will lead the financial functions for Member Coops, establishing an accounting department of internal controls and checks and balances.

Job Duties

Review established infrastructure to identify areas of improvement and opportunity

Oversee the month end close process and produce monthly financials

Attend board meetings, presenting the financials in a digestible manner

Manage the balance sheet, making upper management aware of any potential issues

Coordinate external audits and work with outside CPA on taxes

Annual insurance renewals

Benefits Administration from an accounting viewpoint, understanding how benefits impact the balance sheet

Monitor the company's margins to help inform buying decisions and create efficiencies

Create reporting dashboards for other department leaders, communicating financial information which impacts their departments

Combine with Human Resources to manage payroll, ensuring that people receive their checks on time

Budgeting and Forecasting

Continually identify areas of improvement and cost savings

Requirements

Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or Other Required

5-10 years in an accounting leadership role

Cooperative or Agriculture experience is preferred, but not required

CPA not required

Job functions are performed in an office environment

While traveling may have contact with hazardous materials and drive/travel and work in adverse weather conditions
