Job summary

Augment is seeking its first internal Controller to build and run the accounting function as the company scales. You will own the month-end close, financial operations, and prepare for our first annual audit, transitioning from a third-party firm to in-house processes.

You will collaborate with the Head of Finance and cross-functional partners, establish controls, and implement finance systems with AI tooling to automate repetitive work while supporting investors and potential acquirers.

Qualifications

  • CPA (or CPA-eligible) with a bachelor's degree in accounting or finance.
  • Big 4 audit experience, followed by experience in a high-growth startup or technology company (ideally a SaaS or usage-based business).
  • 7+ years of accounting experience, including hands-on ownership of a close at a venture-backed company.
  • Strong command of US GAAP, including ASC 606 revenue recognition and stock-based compensation.
  • Experience preparing for or supporting an audit, ideally a first audit.
  • Comfortable operating with speed and with incomplete information: you make a sound call, document it, and adjust as the facts change.
  • AI fluent: you already use AI tools in your daily work and look for ways to automate reconciliations, reporting, and review.
  • Hands-on and detail-oriented, and equally able to explain accounting decisions to a non-finance audience.

Responsibilities

  • Own the month-end close end to end, with a clear calendar, checklists, account reconciliations, and review controls.
  • Manage the third-party accounting firm during the transition, then lead the move to an in-house close and decide which work stays outsourced.
  • Prepare financial statements and management reporting that leadership and the board can rely on.
  • Own revenue recognition for subscription, usage-based, and professional services contracts, including contract review and technical accounting memos.
  • Prepare for and lead our first annual audit: select and work with the audit firm, build the PBC list, document key controls, and close open items before fieldwork.
  • Run financial operations: accounts payable, accounts receivable and collections, billing reconciliation, expense management, payroll accounting, and cash management.
  • Manage accruals, prepaid expenses, and vendor commitments, including minimum spend contracts and true-up exposure.
  • Own multi-entity accounting, intercompany transactions, and consolidation as we add legal entities.
  • Coordinate with tax advisors on sales tax, income tax, and transfer pricing, and own the supporting schedules.
  • Maintain the fixed asset, equity, and stock-based compensation records with the cap table and our equity administration provider.
  • Build and document internal controls, policies, and approval workflows that fit a company of our size and scale with it.
  • Select, implement, and improve finance systems (ERP, billing, AP, expense), and automate repetitive work with AI tools and scripting.
  • Support budgeting, forecasting, and diligence requests from investors, lenders, and acquirers.
  • Hire and manage future accounting team members as the function grows.

Job description

About Augment

Supply chain is broken. Let's fix it.

We are a team of engineers, product designers, and customer champions applying the most transformative technology of our times, AI, to one of the largest industries in the world. Augie, our AI agent, now runs end-to-end workflows for some of the largest B2B distributors in North America.

We are looking for a Controller to build and run our accounting function.

Overview

You are the first internal accounting hire at Augment. Today, a third-party accounting firm maintains our books. You will own the month-end close, run financial operations, and prepare the company for its first annual audit. Over time, you will bring accounting in-house and decide what stays with outside partners.

You will work directly with the Head of Finance and partner closely with Sales, Legal, People, and Engineering. The business is growing quickly, and the product changes fast, so you will set up processes while they are still being used. You will help write the finance playbook for everyone who joins after you.

What You'll Do
  • Own the month-end close end to end, with a clear calendar, checklists, account reconciliations, and review controls
  • Manage the third-party accounting firm during the transition, then lead the move to an in-house close and decide which work stays outsourced
  • Prepare financial statements and management reporting that leadership and the board can rely on
  • Own revenue recognition for subscription, usage-based, and professional services contracts, including contract review and technical accounting memos
  • Prepare for and lead our first annual audit: select and work with the audit firm, build the PBC list, document key controls, and close open items before fieldwork
  • Run financial operations: accounts payable, accounts receivable and collections, billing reconciliation, expense management, payroll accounting, and cash management
  • Manage accruals, prepaid expenses, and vendor commitments, including minimum spend contracts and true-up exposure
  • Own multi-entity accounting, intercompany transactions, and consolidation as we add legal entities
  • Coordinate with tax advisors on sales tax, income tax, and transfer pricing, and own the supporting schedules
  • Maintain the fixed asset, equity, and stock-based compensation records with the cap table and our equity administration provider
  • Build and document internal controls, policies, and approval workflows that fit a company of our size and scale with it
  • Select, implement, and improve finance systems (ERP, billing, AP, expense), and automate repetitive work with AI tools and scripting
  • Support budgeting, forecasting, and diligence requests from investors, lenders, and acquirers
  • Hire and manage future accounting team members as the function grows
What we're Looking For
  • CPA (or CPA-eligible) with a bachelor's degree in accounting or finance
  • Big 4 audit experience, followed by experience in a high-growth startup or technology company (ideally a SaaS or usage-based business)
  • 7+ years of accounting experience, including hands-on ownership of a close at a venture-backed company
  • Strong command of US GAAP, including ASC 606 revenue recognition and stock-based compensation
  • Experience preparing for or supporting an audit, ideally a first audit
  • Comfortable operating with speed and with incomplete information: you make a sound call, document it, and adjust as the facts change
  • AI fluent: you already use AI tools in your daily work and look for ways to automate reconciliations, reporting, and review
  • Hands-on and detail-oriented, and equally able to explain accounting decisions to a non-finance audience
  • A clear communicator who works well across teams and with outside firms
  • Self-directed and happy to be both the strategist and the doer in a team of one
Bonus Points
  • Experience moving accounting from an outsourced firm to an in-house team
  • Experience with multi-entity or international accounting, including Canada
  • Experience with usage-based or consumption pricing and variable cloud and infrastructure costs
  • Familiarity with B2B distribution, supply chain, or logistics software
  • Experience with NetSuite, QuickBooks, Bill.com, Ramp, Stripe, or similar tools
  • Prior experience at a Series B or later company
Why Join Us?
  • Competitive Salary + Stock Options
  • Comprehensive Health, Vision, and Dental Benefits
