Job summary

Conexus in Carlsbad, CA is seeking a hands-on Controller to own its full accounting function within a construction industry client. You will manage WIP schedules, support percentage-of-completion, and drive project profitability with strong internal controls.

Reporting to ownership, you lead the accounting team, oversee monthly close, subcontractor invoicing, change orders, and the integration between Procore and QuickBooks, ensuring accurate job costing and audits.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance is required.
• 5+ years of accounting experience, with at least 3 years in construction accounting.
• WIP and percentage-of-completion experience required.
• Job costing experience required.
• GAAP understanding as applied to construction contracts.
• Advanced Excel skills (VLOOKUP, Pivot Tables, financial modeling).
• Experience with Procore, Sage 300 CRE, or Viewpoint is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Prepare and own the monthly WIP schedule using percentage-of-completion and analyze billings and project profitability.
• Present WIP results and margin trends to ownership and leadership.
• Collaborate with project managers to build detailed project budgets and monitor costs by cost codes.
• Ensure each job is costed, billed, and tracked from setup through closeout.
• Direct the full monthly close including reconciliations and accruals.
• Lead the accounting team and oversee subcontractor invoices and material receipts.
• Manage Procore-QuickBooks integration for contracts, change orders, and commitments.
• Oversee accounts payable, weekly check runs, and three‑way matching.
• Supervise monthly progress billing on AIA forms and manage collections and retainage.
• Maintain records and GL reconciliations to support audits.

Our privately held client in the construction industry is searching for a Controller to own its full accounting function. Reporting directly to ownership and overseeing the accounting team, this hands-on role plays a key part in project profitability, financial controls, and the company’s continued growth, and it offers high visibility with senior leadership. The ideal candidate must have construction accounting experience, deep expertise in WIP schedules and percentage-of-completion accounting, and a strong background in job costing.

Responsibilities:

• Prepare and own the monthly WIP schedule using the percentage-of-completion method, and analyze over and under billings, margin fade and gain, and project profitability.
• Present WIP results, margin trends, and project financial insights to ownership and leadership.
• Partner with project managers to build detailed project budgets and monitor costs against cost codes, flagging and addressing overruns early.
• Ensure every job is accurately costed, billed, and tracked from setup through closeout.
• Direct the full monthly close, including bank and credit card reconciliations, accruals, and balance sheet reconciliations.
• Lead the accounting team and oversee daily operations, including review of subcontractor invoices and material receipts for proper job and cost code coding.
• Manage the integration between Procore and QuickBooks so that contracts, change orders, and commitments are set up correctly and sync errors are resolved.
• Oversee accounts payable, including weekly check runs and three-way matching of invoices to purchase orders.
• Supervise monthly progress billing on AIA G702/G703 forms and manage collections, retainage, and multi-state client billing requirements.
• Maintain organized records and general ledger reconciliations that support year-end and internal audits.
• Act as the main point of contact for the outside CPA firm.
• Strengthen accounting processes, policies, and internal controls as the company scales.

Requirements:

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance
• 5+ years of accounting experience, including at least 3 years in construction accounting
• WIP schedule and percentage-of-completion accounting experience are required.
• Job costing experience is required.
• Thorough understanding of GAAP as it applies to construction contracts
• Advanced proficiency in QuickBooks and Excel (VLOOKUPs, pivot tables, financial modeling)
• Experience with Procore, Sage 300 CRE, or Viewpoint is a plus.
