Job summary

Amentum Space Exploration Division (ASED) is seeking a Control Systems Engineer to join our ESSCA program in Huntsville, AL. You will operate, maintain, and design test control systems for spaceflight hardware and collaborate with NASA customers.

The ideal candidate has a BS in engineering or physics and hands-on experience with hydraulics, motors, embedded systems, and data acquisition. You will work in a lab environment, travel domestically, and contribute to mission-critical tests and safety

Qualifications

• Excellent verbal and writing skills.
• Experience with hydraulic and pneumatic fluid control systems, valves and actuators for automated control of position, force, pressure and velocity.
• Experience with electric motor control systems, Variable Frequency Drives or servo-motors.
• Experience with embedded systems and microcontrollers such as Raspberry Pi, Arduino, cRIO or similar.
• Experience with communication protocols such as ethercat, profinet, RS-232, RS485, CAN, I2C, SPI
• Experience with data acquisition hardware such as cDAQ, PXI, HBK, Dewetron, Dewesoft, Gantner or similar hardware.
• Knowledge of basic instrumentation applications - utilizing strain gauges, load cells, pressure transducers, thermocouples, and displacement sensors.
• Desire to conduct detailed hands-on work in a Lab testing environment on sub scale models to full scale structures in some of NASA’s largest indoor and outdoor test facilities.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate transducer and actuator installation, writing technical procedures to be performed by technicians.

• Work with a diverse team of civil servants and contractors to design, develop, set up, and perform structural testing on space flight qualification hardware, and other mission critical hardware.
• Participate in Beyond Zero Safety Culture, attend safety meetings, task meetings, design reviews, and test readiness reviews as requested to support ESSCA and customer requirements.
• Develop and deliver reports and presentations as requested to support ESSCA and customer requirements.
• Perform safety and certification training to support ESSCA and customer requirements.

The Control Systems Engineer will:

• Operate, maintain and troubleshoot existing test control systems.

Job Duties will include:

• Work with a diverse team of civil servants and contractors to design, develop, set up, and perform structural testing on space flight qualification hardware, and other mission critical hardware.
• Participate in Beyond Zero Safety Culture, attend safety meetings, task meetings, design reviews, and test readiness reviews as requested to support ESSCA and customer requirements.

BS degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Aerospace Engineering, or Physics with at least 2 years of experience in control systemsis required. Degree from an ABET accredited institution is preferred. Typically, educational requirements are the equivalent of a Ph.D. with a minimum 4 years of experience; Masters with at least 8 years of experience, or a BS with at least 10 years of experience.

The ideal candidate will be an Engineer with a strong sampling of the following skills and a desire to learn in depth:

Essential Functions:

Work Environment:

General office environment (100%). Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%). Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100%). Requires travel in the domestic USA (<10%).

Physical Requirements:

Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (10%). Also, requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to write reports and perform engineering tasks (40%). Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and Amentum facilities (10%).

Equipment and Machines:

Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%).

Attendance:

Normal workday is from 7:30 a.m. through 4:30 p.m., Monday thru Friday. Minimal overtime may be required (10%) to meet schedule milestones and to support technical demands of the job. Regular attendance is a necessity and adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required.

Other Essential Functions:

The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgment is essential (100%). Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.
