Job summary

M. G. Newell Corporation in Greensboro, NC, seeks a Control Systems Engineer to design, program, and startup control systems for food, beverage and life science projects. You will travel and collaborate with Sales, PM and Field Service to deliver robust solutions that meet client requirements.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering required.
  • Extensive PLC/HMI programming and instrumentation experience.
  • SCADA experience with FactoryTalk, Ignition, or iFix preferred.
  • ISA88 batch programming experience desirable.
  • Familiarity with CIP/HTST; fluid process knowledge beneficial.
  • Willingness to travel ~35% of the time.
  • Strong problem-solving, communication, and teamwork abilities.

Responsibilities

  • Develop control system designs based on project specs and standards.
  • Program and configure PLCs, HMIs, and instrumentation.
  • Visit customer sites to assess infrastructure and quote designs.
  • Prepare accurate project quotes covering materials and labor.
  • Order materials and coordinate with suppliers for timely delivery.
  • Lead or assist startup and commissioning; troubleshoot issues.
  • Maintain comprehensive project documentation.
  • Collaborate with Sales, PM, and Field Service.
  • Promote M. G. Newell products and provide client support.
  • Stay updated on industry advancements and drive continuous improvement.

SUPERVISOR: Director of Engineering, Automation

PRIMARY PURPOSE

As a Control Systems Engineer at M. G. Newell, you will play a vital role in the design, implementation, and startup of control systems for diverse projects, primarily in the food, beverage, and life science industries. Given M. G. Newell’s growth as a system integrator, you may also take on industrial projects that may involve discrete manufacturing, material handling, robotics and more. Building customer relationships is an imperative part of being a M. G. Newell team member.

JOB DUTIES:
  • System Design: Develop control system designs based on project specifications, ensuring compliance with industry standards and client requirements.
  • Programming and Configuration: Program and configure PLCs, HMIs, and instrumentation to implement control logic, ensuring seamless integration and optimal system performance.
  • Proposal Exploratory Trip: Visit the customer's site to assess existing infrastructure, understand project requirements, and devise an optimal control system design for accurate quoting and successful project implementation.
  • Proposal Preparation: Prepare accurate project quotes, considering materials, labor, and other relevant factors to meet client expectations and company profitability.
  • Material Procurement: Order necessary materials and components, coordinating with suppliers to ensure timely delivery for project timelines.
  • Startup and Commissioning: Lead or assist in equipment startup and commissioning, troubleshooting issues, and ensuring systems operate as designed.
  • Documentation: Maintain comprehensive project documentation, including design specifications, programming code, electrical drawings, and startup reports.
  • Instrumentation Knowledge: Possess knowledge of instrumentation for flow, temperature, pressure, and level in the context of fluid process controls.
  • Collaboration: Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including Sales, Project Management, and Field Service, to achieve project objectives.
  • Customer Interaction: Engage with clients to understand project requirements, provide technical support, and address inquiries during project execution. Promote M. G. Newell products and services whenever possible. Provide ongoing support to clients, troubleshoot issues, and address problems in a timely and effective manner.
  • Continuous Improvement: Stay updated on industry advancements, integrate best practices, and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives within the Automation department and company.

REQUIRED SKILLS, EDUCATION AND REQUIREMENTS:

  • Knowledge of fluid process controls, particularly in the food, beverage, and pharmaceutical industries, is highly desired.
  • Extensive experience in PLC and HMI programming, instrumentation, and electrical systems (Allen-Bradley required, Ignition and Siemens a plus).
  • Experience with SCADA systems (FactoryTalk, Ignition, iFix, etc.) highly desirable.
  • ISA88 batch programming experience is highly desirable.
  • Familiarity with process designs of CIP, HTST, heat exchangers, pumps, and valves.
  • Basic understanding of fluid properties, including the interrelationship of flow, pressure, temperature, viscosity, etc.
  • Bachelor’s degree required (Engineering discipline preferred).
  • Willing to travel 35% +/- of the time.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficient in developing control system designs and documentation.
  • Experience in equipment startup and commissioning.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • High energy level, strong work ethic, and leadership by example.
  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects simultaneously.
