Job summary

Covanta is seeking a Control Room Operator in West Palm Beach, Florida, responsible for monitoring and directing operations at the facility. The role includes responding to alarms, executing plant start-up and shut-down procedures, and ensuring the plant operates efficiently and safely.

The ideal candidate will have strong leadership skills and the ability to handle critical events during emergencies. The position requires a High School Diploma and successful completion of licensing exams within the first year.

About the Role

The Control Room Operator leads and directs employees who, under the direction of the shift Supervisor, oversee and direct the operation of the facility. The position is responsible for monitoring the status of all plant systems on a continuous basis, responding to alarms, taking corrective actions, executing plant shut‑down and start‑up procedures, and ensuring that the plant meets its generating requirements while operating safely and environmentally efficiently.

Position Responsibilities

• Demonstrate how actions support Reworld Values and Behaviors, including a safe and inclusive workplace, delivering results through trust, and building breakthrough capabilities.
• Understand and train other Operators on the operating principles of the power facility's systems, components, and steam cycles.
• Maintain required logs and calculations; observe these logs for indications of faulty operation; notify supervisor of abnormal system conditions.
• Provide guidance to Crane, Auxiliary, and Back Plant Operators to maintain a safe and efficient operation.
• Effectively monitor Reworld operations systems and have strong working knowledge of boiler, turbine, and auxiliary equipment operations.
• Be experienced in reading blueprints, P&ID's, and schematic specifications.
• Manage critical events and prioritize tasks during emergencies, providing clear directions in operational, safety and environmental tasks.
• Respond to operational alarms, taking immediate corrective action.
• Be required to be in the field during outages.
• Demonstrate solid understanding of operational best practices, including problem‑solving and making sound decisions that support Reworld's safety and operational goals.

Position Requirements & Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Successful completion of the ASME QRO Provisional Licensing exam required within the first year of holding the position.
• Strong leadership and motivational skills, with the ability to stay alert while sitting for long periods of time.

Physical Demands of the Role

• Ability to walk, stand, sit, and climb.
• Ability to lift/carry 50 lbs.
• Ability to work from heights and in confined spaces.
• Qualify to wear a full‑face respirator.
• Consistently work in various weather conditions.

Shift Work

• This position works on a rotating 12‑hour shift including weekends and some holidays. Overtime will be required.

Pay Transparency

Reworld is committed to paying its staff equitably. The range below reflects Reworld's reasonable estimate of base pay for this role based on primary posting location. The final salary offered for this role will be determined based on factors including, but not limited to, experience, education, geographic location, skills and competencies, travel requirements and/or union contracts (if applicable). Pay ranges are reviewed from time to time and may be modified in the future.

The pay range for the primary location of this position is: $73,807.00 – $101,445.00. For hourly roles, this is the annualized salary. To calculate the hourly rate, divide by 2,080.
