Job summary

SunCoke Energy in Ohio seeks a 3rd Class Stationary Engineer to operate and maintain a production unit on a safe, compliant basis. You’ll monitor equipment, perform routine maintenance, and coordinate with maintenance staff to meet production schedules.

You will read meters, record data, manage work orders in Maximo, and participate in incident investigations. A AA degree and license are required; strong math and problem‑solving skills are essential.

Qualifications

  • Education/experience: AA degree or two-year technical school with 2-5 years' related experience; 3rd Class Stationary Engineer license (OH).
  • Language and writing: ability to read and interpret business documents and write reports and procedures.
  • Computer skills: MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) required.

Responsibilities

  • Meet/exceed production schedules safely following policies and procedures.
  • Operate production unit maximizing productivity within safety, health, environment, and quality guidelines.
  • Maintain compliance with safety and environmental regulations; report deviations and keep records.
  • Participate in incident investigations and implement corrective actions.
  • Train and coach team members in SOPs, JSA, safe work practices, and hazard recognition.
  • Enter work orders into Maximo and communicate issues across teams.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Functions as a productive member of the MTO team to meet or exceed production schedules safely and in accordance with all company and plant policies, rules, and procedures.
  • Performs tasks necessary to operate production unit to maximize productivity within safety/health, environmental, and quality requirements; communicating issues to appropriate personnel and departments as necessary.
  • Maintains compliance with appropriate federal, State and local safety and/or environmental regulations, reports and notifies appropriate plant personnel of any deviations per established standards; maintains appropriate records and reports as required by regulations.
  • Participates in incident investigations as required, including reporting incidents to appropriate personnel, completing required documentation, recommending and implementing corrective actions, and communicating findings as appropriate.
  • Trains and coaches Team Members in Standard Operating Procedure development, Job Safety Analyses, safe work practices, and hazard recognition. Coaches and encourages professional development and growth of skills and abilities.
  • Works effectively with Team Members at all levels of the organization within areas of responsibility, consulting with HR, Department Manager, corporate resources or other parties as necessary.
  • Participates in shift change activities including but not limited to communicating problems, issues, etc. with appropriate personnel, keeping supervisor apprised of such, completing appropriate documentation, logs, etc.; maintaining responsibility for operating area until properly relieved of duty by shift personnel or other authorized personnel.
  • Performs and assists maintenance personnel with maintenance work including but not limited to minor troubleshooting of equipment, PM’s, inspections and other tasks as necessary to ensure maximum productivity is achieved safely and according to company and customer requirements and standards, coordinating activities with other personnel and departments as required.
  • Reads meters and gauges or automatic recording devices at specified intervals to verify operating conditions.
  • Records data, such as temperature of equipment, hours of operation, fuel consumed, temperature or pressure, water levels, analysis of flue gases, voltage load and generator balance.
  • Moves manual controls or overrides automatic controls to bring equipment into recommended or prescribed operating ranges, switch to backup equipment or systems, or to shut down equipment.
  • Visually inspects equipment at periodic intervals to detect malfunctions or need for repair, adjustment or lubrication. Maintains equipment by tightening fittings, repacking bearings, replacing packing glands, gaskets, valves, recorders, and gauges, and cleaning or replacing burners or other components, using hand tools and power tools.
  • Enters work orders into Maximo system.
  • Maintains work area and common areas of plant in a neat and orderly manner.
  • Prepares and completes required reports and forms including but not limited to work orders, permit applications, operation logs, production reports, maintenance logs, time / attendance and shift reports. Informs other crew members of any unusual conditions and pending work.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Education/Experience: Associate’s degree (A.A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; or 2-5 years related experience equivalent combination of education and experience. Must possess a 3rd Class Stationary Engineer license for the State of Ohio.
  • Language Ability: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
  • Math Ability: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
  • Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Computer Skills: To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite - Word, Excel, Powerpoint.
Work Environment

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly exposed to wet or humid conditions (non-weather); work near moving mechanical parts; fumes or airborne particles and outdoor weather conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to work in high, precarious places; extreme heat (non-weather); and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate with noise level in some areas high.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and taste or smell.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
