Job description

Control Panel Design Engineer II

This role is responsible for creating designs and documentation for industrial motor control panels that meet customer requirements while complying with applicable standards and manufacturing procedures. Scope includes standard products, modified standard products, customer- or application‑specific OEM products, and custom products. The position requires interfacing with sales, service, customers, and production, and must be able to work both independently and as part of a team.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Develop schematics, bills of materials, and assembly drawings using AutoCAD.
  • Provide guidance and support to manufacturing and other areas regarding product requirements.
  • Participate in and provide training for other engineering team members.
  • Study and analyze project technical documents and specifications.
  • Apply thorough understanding of relevant electrical standards to prevent electrical hazards.
  • Communicate progress and deviations from schedule or budget to colleagues, managers, and clients.
  • Estimate time, cost, labor, and materials required for production; reformulate plans based on unexpected circumstances or client changes.
  • Adhere to best practices for documentation and version control.
  • Define design approach for new products and platforms and generate design specifications.
  • Prepare accurate field notes, sketches, and single‑line diagrams for use in construction documents.
  • Make design decisions based on specific job requirements and prepare complete design packages.
  • Release panels and prints to operations and release critical materials for purchasing.
  • Ensure product designs meet requirements, quality expectations, and timelines.
  • Mark up schematics and generate revisions or additions to existing drawing sets.
  • Process markups affecting multiple drawings.
  • Ensure consistency across drawing sets.
  • Check markups for practicality, obstructions, and accuracy using multi‑layer techniques.
  • Create, revise, and maintain routings and work centers in the system.
  • Update metrics to improve routing and production planning accuracy.
  • Maintain revision control.
  • Drive cost reduction initiatives.
  • Perform other duties and tasks as assigned.
Education
  • Engineering degree or equivalent; directly related work experience will be considered in lieu of a degree.
Knowledge and Training
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Intermediate Excel skills, including charts, graphs, formulas, tables, pivot charts, and macros.
  • Basic familiarity with 3‑phase and single‑phase power design.
  • Knowledge of VFD and Soft Starter principles.
  • AutoCAD required; AutoCAD Electrical and/or EPLAN preferred.
  • Knowledge of industrial standards and their application, including UL 508A (Short Circuit Current Ratings), NEC, and NEMA; UL 508A MTR Certification preferred.
  • Understanding of manufacturing processes and construction methods, including the ability to maintain design cost targets.
  • Understanding of BOM systems and material management.
  • Basic programming of intelligent devices and components.
  • Ability to read schematics for troubleshooting and identify functional defects.
  • Familiarity with basic programming methods and parameter identification of industrial drives and/or soft starters.
  • Ability to create logical circuits based on customer operational requirements.
  • Familiarity with quality control tools, including 5S and root cause analysis.
  • Basic electronics and circuit analysis, including DC and AC fundamentals, basic electrical laws, series and parallel circuits, network analysis, grounding techniques, magnetism, inductance/capacitance, resistance, diodes, potentiometers, and logic operations.
  • Digital systems knowledge, including logic families, arithmetic/logic instructions, I/O programming, timers, interrupts, and interfacing techniques.
Experience
  • 3+ years of relevant work experience required.
